If you are planning a trip to Beijing and still have no idea which area to stay in, this guide is for you. Beijing is a huge city, and choosing the right base can make a big difference to your trip, especially if you want to visit the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall, Wangfujing, Sanlitun, or even connect onward by train to other cities in China. I have put together 4 recommended areas to stay in Beijing, each with a different personality, so you can compare the vibe, transport convenience, and hotel options before choosing the one that fits your travel style best.
Beijing is the capital of China and one of the most historically important cities in the world. This is where you will find iconic landmarks such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven, and of course the Great Wall of China, one of those places that feels almost unreal when you finally see it in person. Beyond the historic side, Beijing is also a very modern city with an excellent metro system, serious shopping areas like Wangfujing Street, Sanlitun, Beijing SOHO, and luxury malls that can easily fill an entire day. So if you are ready, let’s look at the 4 best areas to stay in Beijing. Each neighborhood has its own strengths, and the right choice really depends on what kind of Beijing trip you want.

Best Areas to Stay in Beijing
For this Beijing accommodation guide, I have selected 4 areas that are convenient, safe, and packed with interesting places to explore: Wangfujing, Hutong Areas – Houhai / Nanluoguxiang, Guomao / CBD, and Qianmen & Dashilan. Each area has a very different character. Some are best for shopping and first-time visitors, some are perfect for old Beijing atmosphere, while others are made for travelers who want modern luxury, high-rise views, and easy access to the business district. Read through each section and choose the base that works best for your itinerary.
All the areas in this guide are connected by Beijing’s metro system, so getting around is generally easy whether you are going to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, or other major landmarks. Besides the metro, another useful option in Beijing is taxi or ride-hailing. Didi is widely used in China and can be booked through apps such as Alipay or WeChat Pay. It is especially helpful when you are staying in areas where the metro is not right at the door, when you are traveling with luggage, or when you want to visit places farther out such as Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) or the Great Wall. The good thing is that you can usually check the estimated fare before confirming the ride, which makes planning much easier.
1. Wangfujing – Best for Shopping and Easy Access to Beijing’s Classic Landmarks
If you ask me where to stay in Beijing for a first trip, Wangfujing is always one of the safest and most convenient answers. This is one of Beijing’s most famous commercial districts, combining shopping, food, city energy, and history in one very central area. Wangfujing has been important for more than 700 years, dating back to the Ming dynasty, when the area was associated with aristocratic residences before gradually becoming one of the city’s busiest shopping streets. Today, it is filled with department stores and malls such as Wangfujing Department Store, Beijing APM, and Intime Lotte, so anyone who loves shopping can easily spend a whole day here.
Transport is also one of Wangfujing’s strongest points. Wangfujing Station on Metro Line 1 is very convenient, and this line connects directly to Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City area, and several key parts of Beijing. If you want a base that feels central, easy, and full of life, Wangfujing is one of the best areas to stay in Beijing.

2. Hutong Areas – Best for Old Beijing Atmosphere, Walking, and Photography
If you want to experience the charm of old Beijing, the Hutong Areas are the place to look. Hutongs are Beijing’s historic alleyways, many of which date back to the Yuan dynasty more than 700 years ago. Today, these neighborhoods still preserve a strong sense of traditional Beijing, with old courtyard homes, local restaurants, small cafés, and hidden corners that are perfect for slow walks and photography. This area is especially good for travelers who want a stay with more character than a standard big-city hotel.
Among the most lively hutong areas, Houhai and Nanluoguxiang are the two names you will hear most often. Houhai has a romantic lakeside atmosphere, especially in the evening when the lights around the water start to come on. Nanluoguxiang is busier and more commercial, with small shops, souvenirs, snacks, cafés, and lots of photo-friendly corners. If you enjoy walking, getting a little lost, and seeing the city at a more human scale, this is a lovely area to base yourself.

Transport is manageable too. For Houhai, take Metro Line 8 to Shichahai Station and walk from there. For Nanluoguxiang, you can use Metro Lines 6 or 8 and get off at Nanluoguxiang Station. If you want an old Beijing vibe and photos that feel different from the usual big-city skyline, staying around the hutongs is a very memorable choice.
