Shizuoka is one of the major prefectures in Japan’s Chubu region, and if you’re dreaming of seeing Mount Fuji from as many angles as possible, this is a place I’d happily tell you to pin on your map. Shizuoka is home to Mount Fuji itself, which means that whether you travel north, south, east, or west, Fuji seems to follow you almost everywhere. On top of that, Shizuoka is also Japan’s largest premium tea-growing region, making it an absolute dream destination for green tea lovers. On this road trip, I visited Obuchi Sasaba, one of Shizuoka’s most famous tea fields, where you can see rows of lush green tea bushes with Mount Fuji rising beautifully in the background. If you’re collecting Mount Fuji viewpoints, Shizuoka will not disappoint.

Getting to Know Shizuoka

Shizuoka sits along Japan’s Pacific coast, with its capital city also called Shizuoka City. The prefecture is known for its beautiful natural scenery and, of course, for being home to Mount Fuji, the UNESCO World Heritage icon that rises 3,776 meters above sea level. This makes Shizuoka one of the most meaningful destinations in Japan for travelers who want to experience the scale and beauty of Fuji up close. And it’s not just about taking photos either. Many travelers also come here to hike, trek, and climb Mount Fuji during the official climbing season.

If you love green tea, you may already recognize the name Shizuoka from tea products sold in Thailand and beyond. But many people may not know that Shizuoka is actually Japan’s largest high-quality tea-producing region. Its green tea is famous worldwide, and many of the premium Japanese teas we see in restaurants, cafés, and convenience stores are grown and produced here. Thanks to Shizuoka’s mountainous landscape, fertile soil, and favorable climate, the tea grown here is known for its excellent quality. If you visit, one thing locals often recommend is trying Shizuoka green tea ice cream, because it has a rich and distinctive flavor that is hard to find anywhere else. And Shizuoka is not only famous for tea. It is also one of Japan’s top producers of high-quality wasabi, known for its fresh green color and sharp, fragrant heat.

In short, Shizuoka is a prefecture that Mount Fuji hunters and green tea lovers should not miss. Wherever you go, Mount Fuji seems to appear as part of the scenery, almost like a travel companion. This trip was a self-drive road trip. We started by renting a car from Karuizawa, then drove up to Nagano, continued down to Matsumoto, Shizuoka, and the Izu Peninsula. One of the highlights of this wider route is seeing the early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms, which usually start blooming around February every year. How to Get to Shizuoka by Public Transport

There are several ways to travel to Shizuoka. For this section, I’ll use Tokyo as the starting point, because many travelers visiting this part of Japan usually fly into Tokyo first before continuing to other cities. Getting to Shizuoka is very convenient thanks to Japan’s strong public transport network. I’ve gathered the main options below, so you can choose whichever one best fits your trip.

DAY 0 :
Mount Fuji Roadside Photo Spot (35°25’52.7″N 138°35’44.6″E)

Mount Fuji Roadside Photo Spot (35°25’52.7″N 138°35’44.6″E) is a spot we found completely by accident while driving from Matsumoto toward Shizuoka. As we got closer to the city, Mount Fuji kept appearing larger and clearer in front of us. So my friends and I started looking for somewhere safe to stop and take a few photos. Eventually, we found this open grassy area with enough space to park nearby. The best part was that we could walk down into the field and take photos with Fuji right there in the background.

If you want to follow this exact spot, pin 35°25’52.7″N 138°35’44.6″E on Google Maps. From here, you can see Mount Fuji clearly from base to summit without anything blocking the view. Since we arrived close to evening, the scenery had a warm late-day mood, with golden-brown grass in the foreground, soft sky colors in the background, and the last light touching the snow on Fuji’s peak. It was such a peaceful and cinematic little stop.

Overall, this Mount Fuji roadside photo spot is a nice place to stop if you happen to drive along this route. But if you’re not driving this exact way or you’re coming from another city, you don’t need to go out of your way for it. Once you reach Shizuoka, there are countless other places where you can photograph Mount Fuji clearly. This spot is also quite difficult to access by public transport.

DAY 1 :
Obuchi Sasaba Tea Fields

Obuchi Sasaba was the first place we visited in Shizuoka. This is one of the prefecture’s most popular tea field viewpoints. First, it’s worth knowing that the tea plantation is private property, but visitors are still allowed to enter for free. So if you come here, please enjoy the atmosphere respectfully, stay on the paths, and do not pick tea leaves, especially outside the harvest season.

When I visited Obuchi Sasaba, we could park near the entrance and walk right in. There were barely any people that day, so my friends and I could enjoy taking photos slowly. The visit is simple: you walk along the road running through the tea fields, and in some parts there are small paths between the tea bushes where you can get closer to the rows of green tea plants.

We were lucky that the tea fields were beautifully green, and the sky was bright and blue. The only unlucky part was that clouds were covering the peak of Mount Fuji that day. So we got beautiful tea field photos, but missed the classic view of Fuji rising clearly above the green tea rows. It was a little heartbreaking, honestly.

The best time to visit Obuchi Sasaba is usually around May, just before the tea harvest season. During this period, the tea fields are at their lushest, and Mount Fuji may still have snow on the summit. That means you can see rows of vivid green tea bushes against blue skies and the white snowy cap of Fuji. Just be mentally prepared for crowds, because this season attracts not only travelers but also photographers from around the world.

After walking around the tea fields, there is a small shop near the entrance selling tea, snacks, and souvenirs. You can stop for a light bite there, although I’m not sure about the opening hours because it was closed when I visited. That day really was not on my side.

Shiraito Falls

Shiraito Falls is perfect for anyone chasing Mount Fuji scenery but also wanting a grand waterfall experience. This is one of Japan’s most beautiful waterfalls. It was designated as a scenic spot and natural monument in 1936, and later selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls in 1950.

The walking route around Shiraito Falls is designed as a loop, so you can simply follow the path. The first waterfall you’ll encounter is Otodome Falls, a 25-meter-high waterfall that can be viewed from a small platform above. This waterfall is already quite beautiful, with powerful water crashing down into the river below, but it is only the appetizer before the main event.

As you continue along the path, once you see Takimi Bridge stretching across the stream flowing down from the waterfall area, you’ll know you’ve reached Shiraito Falls. This bridge is one of the most beautiful viewpoints here because you can see the white streams of water cascading down like a delicate curtain, surrounded by forest scenery that changes color with the seasons. The view from above is so beautiful that it makes you want to hurry down to the lower viewing area immediately.

When I walked down from the bridge and saw Shiraito Falls up close, I was genuinely stunned. The water flows out from the curved rock wall above, which was formed by past volcanic activity. Over time, the slope acts almost like a natural water reservoir, releasing countless streams of clear water from the rocks and creating a wide, fluffy white curtain of waterfalls that flows down into the stream below.

There is also a large viewing platform extending toward the waterfall, where you can take in the refreshing water up close. If you want to explore the lower area more closely, you can walk down near the stream as well, and the photos from there are beautiful. After enjoying the waterfall, don’t miss the viewpoint where Mount Fuji appears behind Shiraito Falls. This is one of the most beautiful Mount Fuji views in Japan, with the waterfall below and Fuji in the background. Seeing it with your own eyes feels incredibly special and makes the whole walking route feel complete.

Nishimuraya Shokudo

After spending most of the day exploring, we stopped for lunch at Nishimuraya Shokudo. We found this place randomly on Google Maps and saw that it had a 4.5 rating, so my friends and I went straight there. It’s a small, simple local restaurant, but the view is lovely because Mount Fuji sits right in the background.

Inside, we were greeted by an elderly Japanese couple who were cooking and serving everything themselves. Most of the menu consists of Japanese set meals, and you can also order sushi by the piece. We were very hungry, so we ordered both sushi and rice sets. The owner prepared everything carefully behind the counter before serving it to us. The food was fresher and tastier than expected, with that comforting feeling of eating a real local meal made by people from the area. The prices were also reasonable, so this was one of those meals that felt genuinely worth it.

Taisekiji Temple

Taisekiji Temple was another place my friends and I visited by chance. To be honest, it wasn’t originally on my Shizuoka itinerary at all. But after lunch, while we were getting ready to pay and head to the next place, a Japanese diner sitting nearby asked if we had already been to Taisekiji Temple, saying that the view was beautiful. I didn’t even know the temple existed, so we asked for directions and followed the recommendation.

From what I later learned, Taisekiji Temple was founded in 1290 by Nikko Shonin, the second high priest, on land donated by a devotee. Taisekiji is also informally known as Head Temple Taisekiji. The name Taisekiji means “great stone temple,” which is believed to be connected to the temple’s location in an area called O-ishi-ga-hara, or “large stone field,” near Mount Fuji.

Taisekiji Temple is the administrative center of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism, a Mahayana Buddhist school within the broader Nichiren tradition. It follows the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin, a Japanese monk whom followers revere deeply. Today, many visitors come to worship the Dai Gohonzon, a wooden inscription containing Chinese and Sanskrit characters. It is considered the supreme object of devotion in Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism and is believed to unite followers and teachings together.

What immediately stood out when we arrived was how the temple sits right along a main road, yet feels incredibly serene. The most iconic feature is the Taisekiji Sanmon Gate at the entrance. This is a photo spot I really recommend because you can capture the solemn beauty of the gate with Mount Fuji clearly visible to the side. The view is genuinely impressive, and when I visited, there were barely any people, so taking photos was very relaxed.

After taking photos at the front, walk straight along the path toward the main temple area. The approach is a long paved road lined with trees, with monks’ quarters on both sides. The atmosphere is so calm that I could hear my own footsteps following me with every step.

At the far end of the path is a raised area with the main hall. I did not enter the building because the main worship area is reserved for Nichiren Shoshu members or visitors who come with members. So I paid my respects from the outside, walked around the peaceful grounds for a while, then returned along the same path.

If you’re visiting Shizuoka and want to see a temple surrounded by beautiful Mount Fuji scenery, Taisekiji Temple is worth considering. It still feels relatively undiscovered by many travelers, so the experience was calm, spacious, and surprisingly photogenic.

Jinba Falls

Jinba Falls is a small waterfall surrounded by impressive nature and a gentle atmosphere. It is often described as a “family-friendly waterfall,” and I can see why. If you’re traveling in Shizuoka with children or older family members and want a relaxed nature stop without difficult hiking, Jinba Falls is a great option. The walking path is easy for both kids and seniors, and the area has a laid-back feel with clear water, small streams, and natural pools where visitors can enjoy the scenery.

Jinba Falls is said to have been named during the Kamakura shogunate period, when shoguns came hunting in this area and set up camp near the waterfall. The word Jinba means “camping ground.” Today, the waterfall is known for its clear water, where you can see aquatic life beneath the surface. The water flowing down from the rocks stays cold throughout the year, so locals sometimes call it a “natural refrigerator.” Some even use the water to chill vegetables or canned drinks.

The area around the waterfall feels like a large natural pool surrounded by rocks and forest. Water flows from the rocky slope above and spreads into little streams below. When I visited, there were barely any people, so we could choose our favorite angles and take photos comfortably. The nature here feels very refreshing, and the air inside the waterfall area was noticeably cool. I tested the water myself, and yes, it really was cold.

If you have extra time and no tight plans afterward, I think Jinba Falls is a lovely place to sit quietly and enjoy the cool, gentle atmosphere. It may be a small waterfall, but the mood is genuinely pleasant. It feels like the kind of place where you could bring a favorite book, sit on a small chair, and enjoy the healing sound of water for a while.

Lake Tanuki

Lake Tanuki is one of Shizuoka’s most beautiful Mount Fuji viewpoints. If you’re collecting Fuji scenery, this is absolutely one to add to your list. The lake is surrounded by mountains and trees, with Mount Fuji rising in the background. On clear days, when sunlight hits the mountain and its reflection appears on the lake surface, the view looks almost like a painting. If you’re driving like I was, you can park at the lake’s parking area and walk down to enjoy the scenery.

Lake Tanuki is located near Fujinomiya in Shizuoka Prefecture and is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The lake was formed after the flow of the Shiba River was altered in 1935, creating a reservoir that was later expanded for irrigation. Lake Tanuki is about 8 meters deep and has a circumference of roughly 4 kilometers. Today, it is also a protected natural area where wildlife and birds live. The lake is popular with locals who come here on weekends for camping, fishing, boating, and lakeside relaxation.

Lake Tanuki is also one of the places where you can see Mount Fuji beautifully, even compared to the famous Fuji Five Lakes: Lake Yamanakako, Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Saiko, Lake Shojiko, and Lake Motosuko. It is also known for the natural phenomenon called “Double Diamond Fuji,” when the sun rises exactly over the summit of Mount Fuji and reflects on the lake surface, creating two diamond-like points of light. This happens only twice a year here, around April 20 and August 20, so it is not something you can easily catch by chance.

The photo spot I recommend is near the end of the lakeside road, where a small pier extends into the lake toward Mount Fuji. Many visitors come to stand here, take photos, and enjoy the view. I didn’t have enough time to walk around the entire lake, so we focused on this area.

If you search for Lake Tanuki before visiting, you’ll probably see photos of a small wooden pier extending over the water, surrounded by greenery, with Mount Fuji perfectly centered in the frame. The real view looks exactly like that. And honestly, if you think the photos look beautiful, the real thing feels even more powerful. It’s not because the lake itself is enormous, but because of the combination of water, nature, and Fuji all sitting together in one frame. It made me feel deeply calm and grateful. The only shame was that the day I visited, clouds covered Fuji almost completely.

Personally, I think Lake Tanuki is perfect for a slow picnic stop. There are picnic tables where you can bring snacks or drinks and sit by the quiet water with Mount Fuji in the background. The mood is incredibly peaceful. If you like camping, there are also campsites around the lake where you can stay overnight and fully enjoy the fresh air and nature. I’m not completely sure about tent rental details because we only stopped by for photos before leaving.

DAY 2 :
Miho no Matsubara

On the second day, we visited Miho no Matsubara, one of Shizuoka’s most treasured Mount Fuji viewpoints. It was registered as part of the Mount Fuji UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2013. The area is popular among travelers and fishing lovers, thanks to its stunning blue sea, dark stone beach stretching for more than 7 kilometers, more than 30,000 pine trees, and Mount Fuji in the background. This is one of the most beautiful and distinctive Fuji views in Shizuoka, and you really cannot find this exact scenery anywhere else.

As soon as we walked into Miho no Matsubara, the atmosphere was calm and shaded by pine trees lining the path. The area felt peaceful and refreshing. As I got closer to the beach, I could hear the waves mixing with the sound of the wind, almost like nature was playing its own music.

Before reaching the beach, you’ll also find Miho Shrine inside Miho no Matsubara, another important site included as part of the UNESCO World Heritage area. The place is also tied to the legend of a celestial maiden, which became the basis for the traditional Noh play Hagoromo. On the second Saturday and Sunday of October, Shizuoka City holds the Hagoromo Festival, including Noh performances near Hagoromo no Matsu, the pine tree believed to be connected to the celestial maiden legend.

The legend tells of a celestial maiden who came to this pine grove, removed her beautiful feather robe, or hagoromo, and hung it on a pine branch before bathing near the shore. When she returned, a fisherman named Hakuryo had taken the robe. The maiden begged him to return it, but Hakuryo insisted it was his because he had found it. Without the robe, she could not return to heaven. Moved by her sadness, Hakuryo agreed to return it on one condition: she had to perform a heavenly dance while wearing the robe. She accepted, danced, and then disappeared into the mist.

This legend became the foundation of the Hagoromo Noh performance, which is staged near Hagoromo no Matsu. The pine tree is culturally important to local people and also represents the natural beauty of the area.

From the pine tree area, you can continue walking down to the beach. The sound of the waves becomes clearer, and the relaxed beach atmosphere opens up in front of you. Some visitors come for a seaside walk, while others come to fish. The highlight, of course, is the view of Mount Fuji. On clear days, Fuji appears majestically in the background, separated by the sea and framed by pine trees. If you’re chasing Fuji views, this is one of the places you should not miss.

After walking around, I recommend stopping at Miho Shirube (Shizuoka City Miho no Matsubara Culture & Creativity Center) on the way out. This creative and information center helps visitors learn more about the pine grove, its history, and the local culture. Inside, there are displays and visuals explaining the area in more depth. If you like understanding places before visiting them, you can stop here first. If not, you can do what I did and visit on the way back, because there are also souvenirs and local products for sale.

For me, visiting Miho no Matsubara felt complete and calming. It is a nature spot with both pine forest and sea in the same area, and if you’re looking for Mount Fuji views, this is another place that truly deserves a spot on your itinerary.

Satta Pass

If you’re driving around Shizuoka, I highly recommend stopping at Satta Pass, a famous viewpoint where you can see Mount Fuji rising above Suruga Bay and the Izu Peninsula. This place is also known from the work of Utagawa Hiroshige, the world-famous ukiyo-e artist from the 19th century, who once depicted this viewpoint in an era before the roads below existed. Even today, if you search for Satta Pass online, you’ll often see references to Hiroshige’s iconic artwork.

From this viewpoint, you can see Mount Fuji in front of you, framed by blue water, green hills, and rows of adorable mandarin orange trees. In the middle, highways curve along the base of the hills, creating a scene that really lives up to its reputation. The cool breeze, the winding roads, and the view all come together beautifully. One small charming detail is that local mandarin oranges are sold at the viewpoint on an honesty system. When I visited, bags of oranges were placed on a shelf, and you could pick one up and put money into a box. They cost just 200 yen (around US$1.50).

Takido Bridge, Urui River

Here’s one extra place I want to add for anyone visiting Shizuoka in April, especially during peak cherry blossom season. One of the most beautiful sakura viewpoints I’ve ever seen is Takido Bridge along the Urui River. This spot has everything that makes cherry blossom viewing in Japan feel complete: thick rows of sakura trees blooming like pink clouds along the river, the gentle sound of flowing water, and Mount Fuji standing clearly in the background under warm afternoon light. The whole scene looked almost like a painting, and it still stays in my memory today.

For the viewpoint, you can pin “Takido Bridge” on Google Maps. The bridge crosses the Urui River and is also used by vehicles. During full bloom, it can get very crowded, so please follow staff instructions and be careful with passing cars. But once you stand on the bridge and look straight toward Mount Fuji with rows of cherry blossoms stretching into the distance, the view is so beautiful that it makes the whole journey feel worth it.

After enjoying the view from the bridge, you can also walk down to the riverside for more sakura scenery. Walking slowly beneath large cherry trees, with branches full of blossoms leaning down toward the river, feels incredibly gentle. With the sound of water, the wind, and petals drifting softly through the air, every step feels beautifully Japanese. Photos turn out well from almost every angle, so if you visit Shizuoka in April, this is one place I really recommend.

Where to Stay in Shizuoka
Super Hotel Fujinomiya

For this Shizuoka trip, we stayed in Fujinomiya because it was a convenient stop after driving down from Matsumoto, and the city is close to Mount Fuji. Super Hotel Fujinomiya was also budget-friendly. I booked accommodation for three people at around 16,000 yen per night (around US$105), which felt like good value when split between us. The hotel is located along a main road, offers free parking, and has a 7-Eleven, Daiso, and Doutor Coffee nearby. Even if you’re not driving, the location is still fairly convenient for walking to basic shops and services.

Super Hotel Fujinomiya seemed newly renovated when I stayed there, so both the exterior and interior felt clean and fresh. The room I booked was quite small, but luckily it was a connecting room, meaning we effectively had two rooms connected by a door. We also had two private bathrooms, so sharing with friends was much more comfortable and didn’t feel cramped in terms of sleeping arrangements.

In terms of in-room facilities, everything essential was provided. And if you’re driving, the free parking is a huge plus. My only real complaint was the room size. It was honestly very tight, to the point where I couldn’t properly open my suitcase on the floor. Other than that, everything was fine. If you plan to stay here with large luggage, I’d recommend booking a bigger room than the one I had.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Shizuoka

That wraps up my Shizuoka road trip with friends. Shizuoka is another Japanese prefecture that I think deserves more attention, especially for travelers who love natural scenery. If you want to chase Mount Fuji views and usually think only of Kawaguchiko or Hakone, I’d love to recommend Shizuoka as another excellent option. No matter where you drive, Mount Fuji seems to appear in front of you like a constant travel companion. And if you love green tea, this is even more special, because you get to taste authentic Shizuoka tea from one of Japan’s best tea-growing regions. For me, Shizuoka is a place where Fuji views, tea culture, waterfalls, lakes, and quiet local roads all come together in a very satisfying way.
