Where to Stay in Seoul 2026: Best Areas & Hotels Guide

Seoul is one of those cities that many travelers visit once and instantly want to return to again and again. It is not just about palaces, cafés, restaurants, or shopping streets like Myeongdong. Seoul changes incredibly fast from year to year, with new Korean fashion stores, pop-up shops, cafés, beauty stores, skincare clinics, lifestyle neighborhoods, and hotels constantly opening, refreshing, and reinventing themselves. Every return trip to Seoul tends to come with something new.

But the big question for anyone planning a Seoul trip is: where should you stay in Seoul? The city is large, and the main neighborhoods are quite spread out. Choose the right area and your trip becomes much easier. Choose the wrong one and you may end up spending a lot of time crossing the city every day, especially if this is your first trip, you have large luggage, or your itinerary is packed with shopping, food, cafés, palaces, trending neighborhoods, and all the places saved on your map.

For this 2026 update, I have refreshed this Seoul hotel guide and narrowed it down to four main areas that are convenient, easy to use, and especially good for travelers who like to explore: Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam, and Insadong. Let’s go through each area in detail and see which one fits your travel style best.

Where to Stay in Seoul

When choosing where to stay in Seoul, I would not only look at whether the hotel is beautiful or how low the nightly rate is. The most important question is whether the hotel is actually in a good location within that neighborhood. Seoul has an excellent subway system, but many popular areas are not exactly next to each other. If you stay on the wrong side of the city for your main plans, a lot of your daily travel time can disappear on trains and transfers.

Tips for Choosing a Hotel in Seoul

  • For first-time visitors: I would start with Myeongdong. It is very tourist-friendly, easy to navigate, full of food and shopping, and works well as a base for exploring several different areas in one trip.
  • For a lively neighborhood with cafés, shopping, and nightlife: Hongdae is a great fit, especially if you like cafés, clothing stores, restaurants, bars, and a younger local energy. If you do not like noise or big crowds, choose a hotel slightly away from the main street.
  • For beauty clinics, luxury shopping, and better hotels: Gangnam is the better match. Just remember that Gangnam is south of the Han River, so if your main plans are palaces, Myeongdong, Hongdae, or the old city, you will need to allow more travel time.
  • For a quieter, more charming side of Seoul: Insadong is a lovely choice. It is close to palaces, Korean cafés, craft shops, traditional streets, and the older part of the city. It is ideal if you do not need to be surrounded by nightlife all the time.

1. Myeongdong – Best for First-Time Visitors, Shopping, Food, and Easy Transport

If I had to choose the best area for a first trip to Seoul, I would still put Myeongdong at the top. This is one of the easiest neighborhoods for travelers because it is central, convenient, and full of subway stations, restaurants, shopping streets, department stores, and easy access to other key areas. From here, it is not difficult to reach places like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Insadong, Hongdae, Gangnam, Namdaemun, and Seoul Station.

In terms of transport, Myeongdong is one of the most convenient areas to stay in Seoul. Myeongdong Station on Subway Line 4 sits right in the neighborhood, and if your hotel is on the northern side of Myeongdong or near Lotte Department Store, you can also walk to Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2. That makes it easier to travel to key districts, including Hongdae and Gangnam via Line 2, or connect to other lines for the palace area, Insadong, and Jongno.

Airport access is also very convenient. You can take the Airport Railroad Express (AREX) from Incheon Airport to Seoul Station, then continue by taxi or subway for a short ride into Myeongdong. Another easy option is the Airport Limousine Bus, especially routes such as 6015 and 6001, which stop near many hotels in this area. This is particularly useful if you have large luggage or do not want to carry your suitcase through multiple subway transfers.

The only thing to know is that Myeongdong can get crowded with travelers, especially in the evening and on weekends. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, choose a hotel slightly away from the main pedestrian street while still staying within easy walking distance of Myeongdong or a subway station. In short, Myeongdong is the best area for travelers who want Seoul to feel easy, especially for a first trip, a family trip, a shopping trip, or any itinerary where you want a convenient hotel base and then use the subway or taxi to explore other neighborhoods each day.

Recommended Hotels in Myeongdong

  • Top luxury / boutique hotels (from KRW 280,000+ / around US$200+ per night):
    • Lotte Hotel Seoul Executive Tower
If you want to stay in Myeongdong without being directly inside the busiest pedestrian street, Lotte Hotel Seoul Executive Tower is one of the safest luxury choices. It sits on the Lotte Department Store side and connects easily with Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2, so getting around Seoul is very convenient. Compared with the Main Tower, the Executive Tower was refreshed in 2018 and feels more contemporary, mature, and polished. It works especially well for families, older travelers, or anyone who wants a reliable high-end hotel in the heart of Seoul.

The Ninth Gate, one of Korea’s oldest Western-style restaurants, also adds to the hotel’s story. It is a strong choice for travelers who like heritage, classic service, and understated luxury.

2. Hongdae – Best for Cafés, Shopping, Youthful Energy, and Easy Airport Access

If Myeongdong is the easiest area for a first trip to Seoul, Hongdae is the area for travelers who want a younger, livelier, and more fun version of the city. This neighborhood is full of clothing stores, cafés, restaurants, bars, beauty shops, photo studios, street performances, and small shops that change with Korean youth trends. If you enjoy walking around from late afternoon into the evening, people-watching, hopping between stores, or staying in a neighborhood that feels more energetic than Myeongdong, Hongdae is a great fit.

Transport is also a major advantage. Hongik University Station connects Subway Line 2, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, and the Airport Railroad (AREX). This makes it easy to reach major areas such as Myeongdong, City Hall, Gangnam, and Jamsil via Line 2. More importantly, Hongdae is one of the easiest neighborhoods for airport access because you can take AREX from Incheon Airport or Gimpo Airport directly to Hongik University Station. It is ideal if you do not want to carry luggage through multiple transfers.

The main things to enjoy here are the Hongdae shopping streets, cafés, restaurants, and street performances, plus nearby areas like Yeonnam-dong and Gyeongui Line Forest Park. These areas feel a little more relaxed, with lots of cafés and a more local city-life mood. The main thing to know is that Hongdae can get very busy and noisy in the evening and late at night. If you do not like too much chaos, choose a hotel near the station or slightly away from the main nightlife streets, so you still have easy access without staying right in the loudest part of the neighborhood.

3. Gangnam – Best for Better Hotels, Luxury Shopping, Beauty Clinics, and Premium Seoul

If Myeongdong is tourist-friendly Seoul and Hongdae is youthful Seoul, Gangnam is the more premium side of the city. This area brings together good hotels, large malls, restaurants, cafés, beauty clinics, luxury shopping, and stylish lifestyle districts. If you are visiting Seoul for beauty treatments, clinic appointments, shopping around Apgujeong or Cheongdam, or simply want a hotel with a more grown-up feel, Gangnam is very worth considering.

Gangnam is large and has several sub-areas, so you need to choose your hotel carefully. If you want energy and easy subway access, look around Gangnam Station or Sinnonhyeon. If you want to be close to COEX, Starfield Library, Bongeunsa, and the huge underground mall, look around Samseong / COEX. If your focus is cafés, fashion brands, clinics, and stylish restaurants, Sinsa, Apgujeong, and Cheongdam will probably suit you better.

Main places in Gangnam include COEX Mall, Starfield Library, Bongeunsa Temple, Apgujeong Rodeo Street, Cheongdam Luxury Street, Garosu-gil, and the beauty-clinic areas around Sinsa and Gangnam Station. The thing to know is that Gangnam is not especially close to Seoul’s classic tourist landmarks such as palaces, Insadong, or Myeongdong. If this is your first trip and you want to focus mainly on the old-city side, allow extra time for crossing the Han River. But if your main plans are in southern Seoul, staying in Gangnam can be very comfortable.

4. Insadong – Best for Palaces, Old Seoul, Korean Cafés, and a More Relaxed Stay

If you want Seoul to be more than shopping, fashion cafés, or youthful neighborhoods, Insadong is a very charming area to stay. It offers the older, cultural side of Seoul, with craft shops, tea houses, galleries, souvenir stores, Korean cafés, hanok houses, and narrow streets that are enjoyable to explore on foot. It is ideal if you want a slightly slower Seoul trip while still staying in a convenient location.

Insadong is located in Jongno, Seoul’s historic central district. When choosing a hotel, look around Insadong Street, Anguk Station, or Jongno 3-ga Station. From here, it is very easy to walk to nearby areas such as Ikseon-dong, Bukchon Hanok Village, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Jogyesa Temple, Jongmyo Shrine, and Cheonggyecheon Stream. If your plan includes palaces, old-city cafés, or hanok neighborhoods, Insadong is an excellent base.

The thing to know is that Insadong is not as lively at night as Myeongdong or Hongdae. Some parts can feel quiet in the evening, and there are fewer high-end luxury hotels than in Gangnam or Myeongdong. But that is also part of its charm. It is easier to walk around, calmer, and better suited to travelers who want Seoul’s cultural, traditional, and small-street side rather than just shopping.

It is one of Gangnam’s strongest luxury choices for travelers who want design, dining, and a strong hotel identity.

  5. Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul
Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul is a true urban resort in the city. Located by Namsan, it feels quieter, greener, and more private than hotels in major shopping districts. Its resort and spa DNA is clear, and many room types include a private relaxation pool or in-room soaking space. In summer, The Oasis outdoor pool is one of the hotel’s signatures and a popular local escape.
