Bern is one of those Swiss cities I would highly recommend if you want to experience Switzerland through history, culture, and old-world atmosphere rather than big-city flash. This is not a city that tries to impress you with skyscrapers or dramatic modern energy. Instead, Bern wins you over with its beautifully preserved Old Town, warm sandstone buildings, long streets lined with arcades, historic fountains, clock towers, and the turquoise-blue Aare River that wraps around the city like a natural frame. Walking through Bern feels almost like slowly drifting back into the Middle Ages without the city ever feeling staged or artificial.

In this guide, I will take you through Bern’s main Old Town landmarks, from the Federal Palace, the Old Town of Bern, and the Zytglogge Clock Tower to Einstein House, Bear Park, and Bern Münster. Bern may not shout “Switzerland” at you the moment you arrive, but the more you walk, the more you notice its details. And honestly, that is exactly what makes this city so charming.

Getting to Know Bern

Bern is the de facto capital of Switzerland, or what is officially often referred to as the country’s “Federal City,” because it is home to the Swiss Parliament, the federal government, and many important national institutions. The city sits along the Aare River in west-central Switzerland and is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the country. In fact, Bern’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Bern was founded in 1191 by Berthold V, Duke of Zähringen, on a bend of the Aare River. The location was excellent for defense, as the river wrapped around the settlement almost like a natural wall. According to local legend, Berthold V decided to name the city after the first animal he hunted in the area, and that animal was a bear, or “Bär” in German. That is why bears became the symbol of Bern, appearing throughout the city in fountains, flags, decorations, and of course, the Bear Park that we will visit later in this guide.

After the Zähringen dynasty came to an end in 1218, Bern was granted the status of a Free Imperial City. From there, it gradually expanded its power by acquiring surrounding territories and became an increasingly influential independent city-state. In 1353, Bern joined the Swiss Confederation and soon became one of its most powerful members.

For me, the beauty of Bern lies in how tastefully the city has preserved its old character. After a major fire in 1405, much of the city was rebuilt in sandstone, which became the warm-toned architectural identity we see throughout the Old Town today. Walking beneath the long arcades, with the Zytglogge Clock Tower and the spire of Bern Münster appearing every now and then, you really do feel the medieval character of the city. If you enjoy historic European towns with depth, Bern is absolutely worth adding to your Switzerland itinerary.

Let’s Start Exploring Bern
Federal Palace

The first place I visited in Bern was the Federal Palace, one of the city’s most important landmarks. Its most striking feature is the beautiful Neo-Renaissance architecture standing proudly in the heart of the city. If you have ever seen photos of Bern with a grand building topped by a green dome and golden roof details, this is the place. The Federal Palace is one of the key symbols of the Swiss capital.

The Federal Palace was built between 1894 and 1902, designed by Swiss architect Hans Wilhelm Auer. Around 95% of the materials used in its construction came from within Switzerland, reflecting the unity and cultural diversity of the country. The complex is divided into three main parts: the West Wing, the East Wing, and the central Parliament Building. The green dome, visible from afar, is one of the building’s most recognizable features.

Today, visitors can enter the Federal Palace on guided tours during available time slots, but I recommend checking the schedule and booking in advance through the official Swiss Parliament website before your visit. Tours are not available all the time, and security checks are required, including identification documents. On this trip, I did not go inside the building. Instead, I focused on the area behind it, known as the Bundesterrasse, a viewing terrace where you can enjoy beautiful views over the Aare River and the city of Bern from above.

The viewpoint behind the Federal Palace is a wide open terrace facing out toward the city. Locals come here to relax, play games such as pétanque, or gather around the giant chessboard on the ground. For me, this was one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Bern. You can sit on the chairs along the terrace and look out over the turquoise Aare River as it curves through old buildings and greenery. The whole scene feels calm and refreshing, the kind of place where simply sitting still already feels like a small reset.

I spent some time taking photos around the Federal Palace before walking back out. I do wish I had time to join the guided tour inside, because judging from the exterior alone, the interior must be even more impressive. But even just walking around the outside and enjoying the terrace view was already worthwhile. If you want a proper “I’ve arrived in Bern” moment, this is definitely one of the places to visit. It gives you both classic architecture and a peaceful city-view corner in one stop.

Old Town of Bern

The Old Town of Bern is the heart of the city, and if you visit Bern, this is where you should give yourself enough time to walk properly. The area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and still preserves its medieval urban layout, sandstone buildings, historic fountains, clock towers, and long arcades known as Lauben, which together stretch for around 6 kilometers. Walking here feels like the whole city was designed to make you slow down and absorb the atmosphere.

The easiest way to explore the Old Town of Bern is to start near the main train station and slowly walk along the main street, Kramgasse, through the center of the Old Town. This route takes you past the Zytglogge Clock Tower, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, and continues toward the far end of the Old Town near Bear Park.

Along both sides of the main street, you will find classic sandstone buildings, historic fountains, shops, cafés, and small alleys that keep tempting you to turn in and explore. You can walk slowly, take photos, stop for coffee, or browse local shops along the way. I followed this main route through the Old Town, occasionally detouring into smaller lanes that looked interesting, before eventually reaching Bear Park.

If I had to choose one feature that makes Bern’s Old Town truly special, it would be the arcades. These are not just beautiful sandstone architectural details. They are practical structures that have protected locals from sun and rain since the Middle Ages. Known locally as Lauben, these covered walkways stretch through the Old Town for more than 6 kilometers and are considered one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. Under the rounded arches, you will find shops, galleries, cafés, and local brands tucked naturally into the sandstone buildings. It feels relaxed, but at the same time, you are constantly surrounded by the atmosphere of medieval Europe.

Aside from the preserved architecture, one of the key highlights of the Old Town is the Zytglogge Clock Tower, originally built in the 13th century and still functioning today. No matter where you walk in the Old Town, you will also often catch glimpses of the tall spire of Bern Münster rising above the rooftops. Both landmarks are so important that I will cover them in more detail in their own sections.

Another detail I really noticed while walking around was Bern’s historic fountains. These fountains feature different statues, each with its own character and story. You will see them throughout the main streets of the Old Town, especially along Kramgasse, Marktgasse, and nearby streets. If you look closely, many of the statues carry symbolic meaning. One of the most famous is the Kindlifresserbrunnen, or Child Eater Fountain, a rather striking statue that is often interpreted as a warning for children to behave.

If you want to go deeper into Bern’s architecture and history, you can also stop by the City Hall, built between 1406 and 1416 and later restored in 1942, or wander toward Nydegg Church, a historic church built on the site of a former fortress. Construction began in 1341, and the church still preserves its Gothic character beautifully. These details are what make the Old Town feel as if time has paused here. Wherever you walk next, Bern continues to reveal another lovely corner.

Zytglogge Clock Tower

The Zytglogge Clock Tower is one of the must-see landmarks in Bern’s Old Town. In the past, this tower was part of the city’s gate system. After new city gates were built, the tower was repurposed as a clock tower for the city and later fitted with a highly intricate astronomical clock.

The Zytglogge Clock Tower was built in the early 13th century, around 1218–1220, and originally served as Bern’s western city gate. Today, the tower stands about 54.5 meters high from the ground to the tip of the spire. Over the centuries, it served several functions, including a watchtower and a prison for women. After the great fire of 1405 destroyed much of the original structure, the tower was rebuilt, and the astronomical clock was installed between 1527 and 1530 by a skilled clockmaker.

The highlight of the Zytglogge Clock Tower is the astronomical clock face and its mechanical figures, which begin moving a few minutes before the hour. You will see the golden rooster, the jester, bears, and Chronos, the god of time, appear as part of a small hourly performance. It is not a flashy theme-park-style show, but rather an old mechanical tradition that still works, which makes it fit perfectly with Bern’s medieval atmosphere.

If you want to see the inside of the tower, you can join a guided tour. The tour explains the history of the tower and the mechanics of the astronomical clock, and it also takes visitors up to a viewpoint where you can enjoy a panoramic view over Bern. Around the tower, you will find plenty of shops, restaurants, and souvenir stores, with people gathering to watch the clock before each hour. I took some photos here and can confirm that it is one of those classic Bern check-in spots that really makes you feel like you have arrived in the city.

Einstein House / Einsteinhaus

If you want to step into the former home of one of the world’s most famous scientists, make sure to visit Einstein House, or Einsteinhaus. This was once the apartment where Albert Einstein lived with his family, and today it has been restored into a small museum where visitors can learn about the period he spent in Bern.

Einstein House is located on the second floor of an apartment building at Kramgasse 49 in Bern’s Old Town. Einstein moved into this apartment in 1903 with his wife Mileva and their son Hans, and lived here until 1905. During this time, he worked at the Swiss Federal Patent Office, and this period became incredibly important in his scientific life. It was from this chapter in Bern that some of his most groundbreaking ideas began to emerge, making this apartment an important historical place in Einstein’s story.

More than a century later, the apartment was restored in 2015 by the European Physical Society and the American Physical Society, bringing Einstein House back to life. Inside, the apartment has been arranged to recreate the atmosphere of the early 20th century, with period furniture and displays that resemble the time when Einstein lived here. The museum also presents notes, writings, and important documents related to Einstein’s years in Bern, making it a meaningful stop for anyone interested in science, history, or Einstein himself.

When I visited, the ground floor had a souvenir shop filled with Einstein-themed items, including small statues, postcards, notebooks, dolls, and other memorabilia. There is also Café Einstein nearby, but it was very crowded. The people I saw waiting outside were actually queuing to get into the café.

To visit Einstein’s apartment, you need to climb an old spiral staircase to the second floor. As I walked up, I kept imagining that this was the same staircase Einstein used every day. The staircase has been preserved beautifully and still feels close to its historical character. Once you reach the second floor, you will find Einstein’s apartment arranged with early 20th-century furniture, photos, and information about his life in Bern. I did not go inside the apartment this time, so I only took a few photos from the outside to share the atmosphere.

There is also an exhibition area on the third floor that presents Einstein’s biography and work, including scientific documents, books, publications, and a 20-minute video about his life and ideas, from his younger years to his rise as one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century. If you are interested in science or want to follow in Einstein’s footsteps, Einstein House is definitely worth a visit. It gives you a more human look at the legendary scientist behind some of the world’s most important ideas.

Bear Park

When visiting a city whose symbol is the bear, you really cannot skip Bear Park. This is one of the places most closely connected to Bern’s identity, as bears have been tied to the city since its founding legend. The park is located along the Aare River and was designed to give the bears a more natural living environment. The area covers around 5,000 square meters, extending from the old bear pit down toward the riverside slope, so visitors can watch the bears from above or walk down toward the river for another perspective.

Bear Park is free to visit all year round and can be viewed at any time of day, although staff are generally present during daytime hours, roughly from 08:00 to 17:00. Whether or not you actually see the bears depends a lot on timing and season, because the bears live quite freely. Sometimes they come out to walk, bathe, or search for food, while at other times they may rest in quieter corners of the park.

The stars of Bear Park are Finn and Björk, along with their daughter Ursina. The three are cared for by the team from Dählhölzli Zoo, which manages the bear facility and ensures that the environment is suitable for them. Visiting here feels a bit like quietly observing the bears’ daily lives. You can walk along the viewing paths and watch them as they move through the older stone area or the more natural riverside section. Just keep in mind that you may not always see them up close, as they are free to rest or hide in different areas. But if your timing is lucky, you may catch them walking around or searching for food right in front of you.

When I arrived, most visitors were tourists and families. Everyone was leaning against the railings, looking for the bears and taking photos. The three bears looked incredibly relaxed and did not seem bothered by people at all. It felt like they were simply living their normal lives while we quietly watched from the side. For me, this was a very memorable experience. If you come to Bern, I really recommend stopping by to say hello to Finn, Björk, and Ursina. They are adorable, and Bear Park is also a beautiful viewpoint where you can look back toward the Old Town from across the river.

Bern Münster

The final stop on this Bern itinerary is Bern Münster, the city’s most important Late Gothic church and the church with the tallest tower in Switzerland. It is not only a place of worship, but also an important cultural and architectural landmark that has stood at the center of Bern’s spiritual and artistic history for centuries.

Construction of Bern Münster began in 1421 and took several centuries to complete. The upper part of the tower was only finished in 1893, meaning the church took generations to reach its final form. In front of the cathedral, you will usually see visitors taking photos, and the building is so tall that it can be difficult to capture the entire tower with a normal phone lens. The tower rises to 100.6 meters, which makes it truly impressive when you stand beneath it.

Inside, the first impression is the grandness of the nave, with three aisles and orderly rows of wooden benches. Near the entrance, there is usually access to the stairs leading up the tower viewpoint, but when I visited, the interior was under restoration, so the staircase was not open.

If you visit when the tower is open, I would recommend checking the hours and going up if you can. Bern Münster has the tallest church tower in Switzerland, and reaching the viewpoint requires climbing around 344 steps. From the top, you can see the Old Town, rooftops, the Aare River, and, on a clear day, even the Bernese Oberland mountains in the distance. The tower entrance fee for adults is usually around CHF 6, so if you want a great city view, go for it.

Deeper inside the cathedral, you will find the main altar surrounded by detailed sculptures and religious artworks. Above the altar, beautiful stained-glass windows bring colorful light into the space. Many of these windows are original works from the 15th century, and each tells stories from the Bible and Christian tradition. For me, this was one of the most powerful and beautiful corners of the church.

The cathedral also contains many sculptures and monuments, including the tomb monument of the von Erlach family. This late-17th-century marble monument commemorates Friedrich von Erlach, an influential nobleman in Bern’s history. The sculpture depicts the Lamentation of Christ, with the body of Jesus lying at the center and the Virgin Mary beside him in sorrow. It is a quiet scene, but emotionally very powerful.

I slowly walked through the cathedral, taking in the wide interior and the details around me, before heading back out because it was almost closing time. Overall, this was a very fulfilling final stop for my first trip to Bern. Bern Münster is not only one of the city’s most important landmarks, but also a symbol of faith, craftsmanship, and art that has stood through centuries. If you visit Bern, this is one place you should not miss.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Bern

That wraps up my trip to Bern, and I have to say that I completely fell for this historic city. Seeing the beautifully preserved architecture, walking through the warm Old Town, visiting the adorable Bear Park, and ending the day inside the magnificent Bern Münster made me appreciate the city even more. Bern may not be as flashy as some larger cities, but it has a very special charm in the way it blends history, classic beauty, and everyday life together.
