Getting to Know Lucerne

Many people know Lucerne by its nickname, the “City of Light.” There are several stories behind the origin of the name, some connected to Latin words related to light and lamps, and others linked to local legends. But what I felt while walking around the city is that Lucerne really does have its own kind of brightness: the light reflecting on the lake, the warm tones of the old buildings, and the mountains standing quietly in the background almost everywhere you look.

Because of its central location, Lucerne is both a major travel destination and an important transport hub in Switzerland. Travelers coming from Zurich, Bern, Interlaken, or other Swiss cities can reach Lucerne easily by train. Once you arrive, many of the main landmarks are within walking distance of each other. It is the kind of city that does not require complicated planning, but still gives you a very complete Swiss experience: water, mountains, history, and a charming old town.

Mount Rigi rises to 1,798 meters (5,899 feet). On a clear day, the summit offers wide views over as many as 13 lakes, including Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, and Lake Lauerz, as well as surrounding peaks and the Alps in the distance.

Rigi Historic Wednesday Cogwheel Train

The easiest way to get up to Mount Rigi is by mountain railway. For this trip, I rode the Rigi Historic Wednesday train, a special heritage cogwheel train that usually runs every Wednesday from around Whitsun / Pentecost season until October. What makes this ride special is that it follows the route of Europe’s first mountain cogwheel railway. The journey takes around 40-45 minutes, and honestly, there is no time to feel bored. Along the way, you pass green valleys, Swiss countryside, grazing cows, sheep, horses, and goats, plus dark wooden houses scattered across the hillsides. It is exactly the kind of scenery people imagine when they think of Switzerland.

If you want to ride the heritage train, I recommend checking the official Rigi schedule again before traveling, because this special service does not run every day and the schedule can change from year to year. If your travel date does not match the historic train, you can still take the regular mountain railway up to Rigi Kulm. It is easy, fast, and the views along the way are still beautiful.

Rigi Kulm Viewpoint

After riding the train for a while, we arrived at Rigi Kulm. The train stops on a platform near the slope, and from there you can already start seeing wide green valleys and mountain ridges stretching out in every direction. A short walk uphill brings you to an area with a souvenir shop and a restaurant. If you visit during colder months and need somewhere warm before continuing to the viewpoint, this is a good place to stop for a hot drink.

The viewpoint itself is a wide open platform extending out from the summit area. On a normal clear day, you can see the lakes below in a dramatic panoramic view, especially Lake Lucerne, the main lake closest to Mount Rigi and the largest in the area. The lakes curve between towns, villages, and mountains, making the landscape feel almost unreal.

But our luck ran out a little on the day I visited. The fog came down heavily, so we only caught a small glimpse of the lake before everything slowly disappeared into white mist. It was one of those mountain days where the weather did not fully cooperate. Still, that is part of traveling in Switzerland too. Sometimes the view appears, sometimes it hides, and sometimes you simply have to come back for it again.

Lake Lucerne Cruises

After spending time on the mountain, we took the train back down and continued with a boat ride on Lake Lucerne. The route we took was on a two-level ferry from the pier at Vitznau to Luzern Bahnhofquai, the boat pier right by Lucerne’s main train station. The journey takes around 45-60 minutes depending on the boat schedule and season. The boat itself was spacious, with indoor and outdoor seating as well as a small bar for snacks and drinks. We sat on the upper deck, where it was easy to step outside and take photos of the lake views.

For this Lake Lucerne cruise, I used a 1st Class Swiss Travel Pass, so I could sit in the First Class section of the boat on the upper deck. The difference felt quite clear: more space, more seats, fewer people, and easier access to the outdoor area for photos. If you enjoy a relaxed scenic boat ride, the First Class section on Lake Lucerne is genuinely comfortable.

The best thing about this boat ride is that it becomes a gentle breathing space in the middle of the day. After the cold wind and fog on the mountain, sitting on the boat while watching lakeside houses, distant mountains, and calm water slowly carry us back toward the city felt incredibly peaceful. It is the kind of Swiss experience where you do not have to do much. Just sit, look around, and enjoy the view.

Overall, taking a Lake Lucerne cruise was one of the most relaxing parts of the trip. If you want to slow down, enjoy the water, and see Lucerne from a softer angle, I highly recommend adding a boat ride to your itinerary.

Hotel Schweizerhof Lucerne

From the pier, we walked over for lunch at Hotel Schweizerhof Lucerne, a historic lakeside hotel that has been open since 1845. It is one of Lucerne’s classic hotels, with a neoclassical façade and a prime location facing Lake Lucerne. Once you step inside, you can feel that this place is not only selling beautiful architecture, but also the atmosphere of an older era that has been carefully preserved.

The hotel has two main dining rooms: Pavillon, which looks out toward Lake Lucerne through large windows, and Galerie, where we had lunch. Galerie has a warmer, more private, and more elegant atmosphere. It almost feels like having a meal inside an old palace, with beautiful walls, columns, and decorative details that feel like works of art. The restaurants serve Swiss and European-inspired cuisine using local produce.

For lunch, I had beef pasta served with a smooth, flavorful sauce and a drink. The food was not overly dramatic, but it was easy to enjoy, tasted good, and matched the mood of the room very well. For me, this lunch felt like a pause after a full morning of exploring: sitting slowly inside a historic hotel with a beautiful atmosphere and lakeside setting made Lucerne feel even more refined.

Lake Lucerne Promenade

After lunch, we continued with a walk along the Lake Lucerne Promenade, one of the most popular places in the city for anyone who wants to enjoy the meeting point between water, mountains, and old-town atmosphere. The promenade was developed in the 19th century as a leisure space for both locals and visitors, especially as Lucerne became increasingly popular as a travel destination. Today, it remains one of the best places to slow down and enjoy the city.

The promenade stretches along the city’s lakeside. Since we had lunch at Hotel Schweizerhof Lucerne, which sits right by the lake, we could simply cross the street and start walking. On one side, you see Lucerne’s old buildings and city streets. Along the promenade itself, there are trees, garden areas, and small places to sit and rest.

On the other side is Lake Lucerne, with piers, boats of different sizes, and the Swiss Alps surrounding the water. You can see mountains such as Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi, the same mountain we had visited earlier in the morning. This is exactly what makes the promenade so popular: you can simply walk, take photos, and enjoy the city’s natural setting without needing to plan anything complicated.

Along the walk, you can also see several of Lucerne’s historic landmarks, including Chapel Bridge and the old city wall, the Museggmauer, which is more than 600 years old. These structures show how much history is still woven into the city’s everyday landscape. It is one of the things I like about Lucerne: the history does not feel locked away in a museum. You can see and touch it as you walk through town.

The promenade is also used for festivals and local events, which makes it more than just a scenic walkway. It is a real public space for the city. For me, this is one of the best places in Lucerne to relax, breathe, and enjoy the lake slowly.

Chapel Bridge

If I had to choose the first image that comes to mind when thinking of Lucerne, it would be Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). This covered wooden bridge crosses the Reuss River and is considered one of the oldest covered wooden bridges in Europe. It was built in the 14th century as part of the city’s old defensive system before becoming the landmark that now defines Lucerne.

Besides its defensive purpose, Chapel Bridge was also built to connect the old town with the newer part of the city. Originally, the bridge was about 270 meters long, but after damage and a major fire over the centuries, its current length is around 204 meters.

The bridge is designed as a covered walkway, and inside you will find triangular paintings under the roof. Many of these paintings were created by Hans Heinrich Wägmann around 1611 and depict scenes from Swiss and Lucerne history, as well as episodes from the life of Saint Leodegar, the city’s patron saint. Some paintings were damaged in the fire, but the remaining works have been preserved and restored as much as possible. If you walk across the bridge, remember to look up at the ceiling and corners. These artworks are part of what makes the bridge so historically valuable.

Another highlight of Chapel Bridge is the octagonal Water Tower beside it. The tower is 34 meters tall and was built around 30 years before the bridge. In the past, it served many purposes, including as a prison, archive, treasury, and watchtower. Today, the Water Tower remains one of Lucerne’s most important historic symbols.

Walking across the bridge also gives you another beautiful angle of Lucerne. You can look out toward cream and brown buildings lined along the river, with greenery in the background. The view feels different from seeing the city from street level, and it is honestly very beautiful. If you walk across the bridge after taking photos, there is also a souvenir shop near the middle area where you can stop before continuing your walk.

Rathaus Stadt Luzern

We ended our Lucerne walk at Rathaus Stadt Luzern, the city hall located in the heart of the old town. The building stands out with its large structure and prominent clock tower. It was built between 1602 and 1606, designed by the Italian architect Anton Isenmann in a Renaissance style influenced by Italy. At the time, this kind of design was quite unusual in Switzerland, but the building was completed successfully and became an important center of government and civic life for Lucerne.

On the day I visited, we did not go inside because the building was closed, so I only photographed the exterior. Still, the outside is already worth seeing. Rathaus Stadt Luzern sits among old buildings and narrow lanes that connect through the old town. Its stone façade looks elegant and detailed, while the balcony area has a slightly Italian palace-like feel.

The most distinctive feature is the large clock tower. Above the clock is an observation and lookout area, which historically served a defensive purpose as a place to watch for danger. Even if you do not enter the building, simply standing outside and looking at the structure is worthwhile. It is one of those historic landmarks that shows how well Lucerne has preserved its old-town character.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Lucerne

That wraps up my Lucerne trip. For me, Lucerne is one of the Swiss cities that feels wonderfully complete. It has old-town streets, beautiful architecture, lakeside scenery, surrounding mountains, relaxing boat rides, and easy mountain excursions all in one compact place.
