Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

Zurich has always been one of the cities in Switzerland I wanted to visit the most. Besides being the largest city in the country, Zurich is often described as a place that feels almost like heaven on earth. Think centuries-old buildings that have been beautifully preserved, peaceful nature, a slower pace of life, and a cityscape that makes every walk feel special. It is the kind of city that leaves an impression with every small moment.

In this review, I want to share some of the most beautiful places and experiences in Zurich, from taking in panoramic views of the city surrounded by mountains and the Limmat River, to wandering through the classic Old Town, tasting real Swiss cheese, and visiting the world-famous Lindt Home of Chocolate. This Zurich review is packed with everything I loved from the trip. Anyone dreaming of experiencing a real-life fairytale city can easily follow this route, because every place I visited genuinely looked like it belonged in a storybook.

Getting to Know Zurich

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and one of the country’s most important centers for business, finance, and culture. It is known for its excellent quality of life and for being a global city that blends a long history with modern development beautifully. Historically, Zurich’s story goes back as far as around 2,000 BC, beginning with Celtic settlements before later becoming a Roman customs post known as “Turicum,” where trade and commerce flourished.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

By around 15 BC, Zurich’s location along the Limmat River made it an incredibly convenient place for trade. Merchants came here to buy, sell, and exchange goods, helping the city’s economy grow steadily over time. That foundation is part of why Zurich remains an important political and economic center today. It is also the starting point for many people visiting Switzerland. For anyone who wants a city with an old-town mood but still feels modern and polished at the same time, Zurich is absolutely one of the Swiss cities worth visiting at least once.

Let’s Start Exploring Zurich
ETH Zurich + Polyterrasse

For anyone who wants to see Zurich from above, one viewpoint I really recommend is Polyterrasse, located within the grounds of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, better known as ETH Zurich. To get up here, you can take a bus or ride the Polybahn funicular. I chose the Polybahn, a small red funicular that slowly climbs up the hill with city views opening up around you. I boarded at Bahnhofstrasse/HB and got off at ETH Zurich Station. The ride takes only around two minutes before you arrive at the top.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

Once you reach the top and walk out from the funicular station, you enter the university area. ETH Zurich is a public research university known worldwide for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The viewpoint people come for is right in front of the grand Federal Institute of Technology building. It is a wide plaza that stretches out toward the city, and from here, you can look across Zurich in a sweeping panoramic view.

From this spot, you can see rows of buildings and houses layered across the city among green trees. Throughout the day, Polyterrasse is filled with both travelers and students who come to sit and enjoy the view. Beyond being a viewpoint, it is also a great place for a picnic or even a quiet reading break. On a clear day with good weather, Polyterrasse really feels like one of the nicest little resting corners in Zurich.

Albert Einstein’s Locker

Another spot worth checking out when visiting ETH Zurich is Albert Einstein’s locker. The locker is located inside Zone F on the second floor of the corridor in the Federal Institute of Technology building. According to a story passed down at the university, this was once the locker used by Albert Einstein during his time studying and working here.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

Albert Einstein enrolled at ETH Zurich in 1896 to study physics and mathematics, graduating in 1900. After working in various roles related to his field, he eventually returned to ETH Zurich as a professor of theoretical physics from 1912 to 1914.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

The locker is said by students and university staff to have belonged to Albert Einstein. Today, the university has placed photographs, books, and small items related to him inside the locker and displays them for visitors to see up close. In that sense, this locker has become a small symbol of Einstein’s legacy and a reminder that he once studied and taught at this university.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

After finding Albert Einstein’s locker, I continued to the ETH Zurich library on the opposite side. Officially known as ETH-Bibliothek, this is the largest public library for technology and science in Switzerland. What makes it impressive is that it functions as a major information hub for students, researchers, and academics from around the world. The library holds more than 9 million items, including books, journals, maps, and multimedia materials. It is seriously complete, and easily one of the most important knowledge centers in Switzerland.

Zürichhorn

For anyone looking for a relaxing place to breathe in fresh air and enjoy nature, Zurich also has Zürichhorn, a lakeside park perfect for slowing down. This public park sits along Lake Zurich and was developed during the city’s expansion in the late 19th century, when the city wanted to create a recreational lakeside space for Zurich residents. Over time, the area continued to evolve, and today Zürichhorn is one of the most popular parks in the city, loved by locals for relaxing and enjoying outdoor activities.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

Inside Zürichhorn, the atmosphere is wonderfully shady, with large trees spread across wide lawns where people can sit for picnics or even have barbecues in dedicated areas. Another highlight hidden within the park is the Chinese Garden, which was designed and gifted by the city of Kunming in 1993 as a symbol of friendship between the two cities. The garden is decorated in a traditional Chinese style, with pavilions, ponds, and winding walkways that invite visitors to slow down and relax.

There is more to Zürichhorn than greenery alone. The park also features several artworks, including the Pavillon Le Corbusier by the famous Swiss architect Le Corbusier, as well as a well-known sculpture by Henry Moore. On top of that, several areas in the park allow people to swim in the lake, rent boats, or use designated swimming areas. All of this makes Zürichhorn especially popular during summer in Zurich, when people come here nonstop to enjoy the water and the outdoors. For anyone who wants to sit back, enjoy nature, and take in the lake in a truly chilled atmosphere, I really recommend this place.

Fischerstube Zürihorn Restaurant

After walking around Zürichhorn, if you want to refuel with a good meal, I recommend heading to Fischerstube Zürihorn, a restaurant located right by the lake inside the park area. Fischerstube Zürihorn is a long-established restaurant dating back to the 20th century. It is known for its beautiful lakeside setting, local fish ingredients, and traditional Swiss dishes, which continue to attract both locals and travelers.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

The name “Fischerstube” in German means “fisherman’s room,” reflecting the restaurant’s origins as a place where local fishermen gathered and traded fresh fish from Lake Zurich. The atmosphere here is distinctive, with a traditional Swiss chalet style. The exterior features raised wooden beams and a roof with a rustic texture, while inside, there are both indoor and outdoor seating areas surrounded by the lakeside scenery. It feels warm, friendly, and wonderfully local.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

The menu focuses mainly on local fish, but there are also meat dishes and vegetarian options. I tried both steak and salmon, and honestly, the portions were generous and satisfying. The flavors were rich, balanced, and easy to enjoy, especially for Thai taste buds. For anyone looking for a lakeside dining experience that feels different from a normal city restaurant, Fischerstube Zürihorn is such a lovely choice.

Lake Zurich Boat Ride

Next, I took everyone to the ferry pier at Zürichhorn. The boat is a two-level ferry with indoor seating, long tables, and large glass windows for enjoying the view. There is also an outdoor deck where anyone who wants to feel the breeze can sit outside. If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you can hop on the boat without paying extra.

The ferries run on a schedule, so if you plan to catch a particular departure, I recommend arriving before the scheduled time because boats here arrive and leave very punctually. The route takes you across different points on Lake Zurich, starting from the Zurichhorn Casino pier and continuing to Zürich Bürkliplatz, with city views unfolding along both sides of the lake. The blue sky, sparkling water, and lakeside buildings make this one of those simple Zurich experiences that feel genuinely good. You can get off at whichever pier you want, making it an easy and relaxing activity to add to your Zurich trip.

Zürich Bürkliplatz Pier

After around 20 minutes on the Lake Zurich boat ride, I arrived at Zürich Bürkliplatz. What makes this pier special is that it sits where the Limmat River meets Lake Zurich. The area is lively, with people getting on and off boats throughout the day. One thing I loved was walking up from the pier and seeing swans floating peacefully on the lake, along with ducks and small birds. It was such a slow-life, peaceful Zurich moment.

Zurich Old Town Area

One of the most popular areas to explore in Zurich has to be the Zurich Old Town Area, the city’s historic core with a history stretching back more than 2,000 years. This area originated from Roman settlements before gradually developing into the commercial and political center of Zurich. Today, many medieval buildings from the city’s early periods are still beautifully preserved, which is why this neighborhood continues to attract visitors throughout the year.

Münsterhof

Within the Old Town, there is a relaxed square called Münsterhof, a place where locals often sit and enjoy the breeze. It is located near Fraumünster, one of Zurich’s four main churches. The square itself is open and spacious, with chairs placed in the middle for people to sit and rest. Around the square are historic buildings that now house cafés and restaurants. There is also a small fountain here, and if you are thirsty, you can refill your bottle with drinking water.

Münsterbrücke Bridge

The Zurich Old Town Area is very walkable, with plenty of photo spots along the way. My walking route continued across the bridges toward the viewpoint, starting with Münsterbrücke, a pedestrian and road bridge crossing the Limmat River. This bridge is significant enough to be listed among Switzerland’s cultural properties of national and regional importance.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

From the middle of Münsterbrücke, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Old Town, with historic brick buildings lining both sides of the river. People stroll along the riverbanks, some sit in cafés or stop by restaurants, while ducks swim lazily in the water. From here, you can also see Grossmünster rising proudly in the neighborhood, along with Fraumünster, another of the city’s main churches.

The atmosphere along both sides of the river is wonderful. You get views of old buildings, people moving through the streets, boats resting on the water, and a cool breeze brushing past as you walk. With the leaves just beginning to change color, the whole scene felt perfect for a relaxed stroll. Beyond the river views, there are also plenty of corners along the way where you can stop for beautiful photos.

After soaking in the views, I continued toward Lindenhof, another beautiful area of the Old Town located along the Limmat River. The spot I was heading to is a viewpoint on a hill, and the walking route gradually slopes upward through old buildings that now house shops and boutiques. Along the way, you’ll pass shoe brands, bag shops, clothing stores, home décor shops, and both Swiss and international brands.

Lindenhof

The viewpoint at Lindenhof sits on Lindenhof Hill and is easily one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Zurich. At the top, there is a wide open square shaded by large trees, with long benches where people can sit and relax. There is also a pétanque area and a giant chessboard where locals gather to play together, filling the viewpoint with light laughter and a lively local atmosphere.

The viewpoint itself is located along a large wall on the hillside. From here, you can look out over Zurich, with Fraumünster, the Limmat River, the valley, historic buildings, narrow streets, and tiny-looking people moving around below. It is the kind of million-dollar view you can simply walk up to and enjoy for free.

Stadtkäserei

If you come to Switzerland and want to taste authentic Swiss cheese, I recommend trying Stadtkäserei. This place is known for Swiss cheese products made with local ingredients. The name Stadtkäserei itself means “city cheese dairy,” which perfectly reflects its mission to present Swiss cheese-making culture and heritage for people to learn about and taste.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

Inside the shop, you will find traditional Swiss cheeses such as Gruyères, Emmental, and Appenzeller, along with special local cheeses that are harder to find in regular markets. For anyone who wants a more exclusive cheese experience, Stadtkäserei also offers cheese tasting. You sit in a private area on the second floor, which feels almost like a small cheese-making room. Then you choose a drink to pair with the cheese, from white wine and red wine to a cheese protein drink made by the shop itself. Once the drink is chosen, the staff serves a full cheese board with fruit and explains the cheeses and suggested pairings. After that, you can simply enjoy the cheese however you like. Personally, I think cheese pairing really depends on individual taste. There is no strict right or wrong, and that is what makes this experience fun.

Besides cheese tasting, Stadtkäserei also has a restaurant area serving a variety of dishes, many of which feature cheese as a main ingredient. I tried several dishes, and everything tasted rich, balanced, and satisfying. If you are hungry, this is definitely a place where you can trust the meal. You will probably walk out happily full.

Lindt Home of Chocolate

Chocolate lovers visiting Zurich absolutely need to visit Lindt Home of Chocolate. It is a chocolate museum and also the headquarters of the world-famous Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate company. The attraction opened in September 2020 with the purpose of celebrating Switzerland’s chocolate heritage while giving visitors insight into the history and production of chocolate.

Buying Tickets for Lindt Home of Chocolate

For anyone who wants to tour the chocolate museum, learn about the production process, and enjoy unlimited chocolate tasting at Lindt Home of Chocolate, you can buy tickets in advance. The easiest and most convenient way for me was through OTAs like Klook and KKday. The ticket comes as a QR code that you can scan directly at the entrance. During some periods, prices may even be cheaper than buying on-site, making it both convenient and worthwhile.

Lindt & Sprüngli was founded in 1845 and has since become one of the most famous chocolate brands in the world. Lindt is known for its quality and innovation in premium chocolate production, helping cement Switzerland’s reputation as a chocolate destination. The area I visited here was the Lindt Home of Chocolate museum, created to tell the story of Lindt chocolate from the very beginning of production all the way to the final products we see on shelves.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

When you step into the first floor of Lindt Home of Chocolate, the first thing you see is the 9-meter-tall Lindt chocolate fountain, considered the largest chocolate fountain in the world. More than 1,500 liters of chocolate circulate through the fountain. On the same floor, there is also the world’s largest Lindt chocolate shop, covering more than 500 square meters. If you want to bring Lindt chocolates home, this is the place to shop.

To enter the exhibition inside Lindt Home of Chocolate, you walk up a spiral staircase to the museum floor. The exhibition is divided into several rooms, beginning with the origins of chocolate before taking visitors through processing methods and chocolate-making techniques until the final Lindt products are created.

What I really liked about the exhibition was how interactive each room felt. There are stations where visitors can take part in the experience, such as grinding cocoa beans, tasting different chocolate flavors, and seeing cacao plants up close. It makes the whole museum feel lively and engaging, not just informative.

My favorite room was the final one before exiting the exhibition. It features a giant Lindt chocolate display and a photo booth for souvenirs. This room is fun for photos, but what I liked most was that you can pick up eight different flavors of Lindt LINDOR chocolate to take home. The chocolates are displayed in round transparent containers with small openings where visitors can reach in and grab them. If you want to taste Lindt before deciding what to buy, this is the perfect place to try a few flavors first.

I spent a little over an hour inside the exhibition before leaving. Overall, visiting Lindt Home of Chocolate opened up the world of chocolate for me. I had eaten Lindt chocolate in Thailand before, but I did not even know it was Swiss. Seeing the production story and learning the background made the experience feel surprisingly heartwarming. Chocolate lovers will definitely enjoy this place, and I would say it is one of the must-visit attractions in Zurich.

25hours Langstrasse Hotel

Another hotel I stayed at and really liked was 25hours Langstrasse Hotel. This is a bold, creative hotel that I think stylish travelers, hip travelers, and anyone who loves art will enjoy. It is a boutique hotel located on Langstrasse, an area known as Zurich’s red-light district. Opened in 2017, the hotel stands out with a design concept that brings together the contrast between Langstrasse and Europaallee through the lens of art and capitalism. The result is a hotel that reflects the local culture of the neighborhood in a very distinctive way.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

From the outside, 25hours Langstrasse Hotel is a black corner building that is easy to spot. In front of the hotel, colorful tables and chairs welcome people who come for food, drinks, or a casual sit-down, as well as hotel guests. Once you step inside, you reach the lobby for check-in, but what I really liked was the entire lobby atmosphere. It is decorated with artworks and collectible pieces, and my first impression was that it felt more like a museum than a hotel.

Zurich Switzerland: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Old Town, Lake Zurich & Swiss Chocolate

Another detail I loved is the small library corner on the left side of the lobby, decorated with FREITAG bags, a Zurich-born bag brand. If you want to buy one, you can get it here. Even better, every guest room comes with a FREITAG bag that guests can borrow and use during their stay. It is such a clever idea because it turns a guest into a potential customer so easily. I honestly wanted a FREITAG bag from the first day I stayed here.

Now for the room. 25hours Langstrasse Hotel has 170 rooms, including Large rooms of 25 square meters that can be arranged with twin beds, and Trainspotting Suites with a large double bed in a 44-square-meter space. I stayed in the first type. The room was decorated with a vibe that felt almost like being inside a bold, colorful bar. From the furniture to the props, everything had a playful character and did not feel like a typical hotel room. Magazines were clipped and hung with string, and there were details like a film camera, lamps, and all sorts of props that made nearly every corner feel photo-ready. It felt less like staying in a hotel room and more like staying in the home of a very cool artist.

The bed is soft and comfortable, and the room has fast Wi-Fi that worked smoothly throughout the stay. From the room, you can look out through large windows to see the view outside. My favorite part, though, was the bar area. Everything in the fridge was free, including water, soft drinks, beer, and snacks, and they can refill it daily.

For breakfast, 25hours Langstrasse Hotel serves a full breakfast inside NENI, which turns into a restaurant and bar at night. The breakfast selection includes Swiss and Western items such as cheese, smoked salmon, sausages, scrambled eggs, fruit, and plenty of drinks. You can easily start your day here before heading out to explore.

Beyond the facilities I mentioned, 25hours Langstrasse Hotel also has Cinchona Bar, which becomes a gathering spot for night owls in the evening. If you want to have a drink in a relaxed atmosphere, this is a nice place to go. For guests who want to work out or unwind, the hotel also has a fitness area and spa.

One of the most interesting ideas at 25hours Langstrasse Hotel is that guests can actually use objects as payment for a stay. If someone does not want to pay with money, or happens to be short on cash, they can speak to the staff and offer an object or artwork from their collection instead. Many of the artworks seen around the hotel were received from former guests. This makes the hotel feel even more charming and full of one-of-a-kind stories. For anyone looking for a hotel that is more affordable than classic luxury options but still complete in function, full of character, and in a convenient location, 25hours Langstrasse Hotel is a great choice. It gives you a stay that feels memorable in a completely different way.

Summary of Visiting Zurich

And that wraps up all the places in Zurich that I wanted to share. After visiting, I can honestly say that Zurich has such a warm and gentle mood. Anyone who loves old towns, historic architecture, and buildings that carry thousands of years of history will probably feel their heart soften while walking around this city. For travelers who enjoy slow days, city views, and beautiful scenery, Zurich is truly worth visiting. Whether you are admiring the city from ground level or climbing up to a hilltop viewpoint for a skyline view, everything feels elegant and beautiful. It has easily become one of my favorite cities, and I already know that if I have the chance to return to Europe in the future, Zurich is definitely a city I would love to visit again.
