Rayong Thailand: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Relaxed Escape near Bangkok

Rayong is one of those travel provinces that is not far from Bangkok at all. You can drive there in under 3 hours, and yet the province is packed with so many places to visit, from beaches and mountains to forests, each with its own kind of beauty. Some people may not believe it, but Rayong is actually the province with the highest income per capita in Thailand. Pretty impressive, right? On top of that, Rayong is also a travel destination with many well-known attractions and an important economic city, covering industry, tourism, and agriculture all in one province.

This time, I want to take everyone on a relaxed 2-day, 1-night Rayong trip, the kind where you do not have to rush or take a ferry to an island. We will sit at a minimalist beach club café, walk an easy trail at Khao Laem Ya, a beautiful coastal mountain stretching into the sea with million-baht views, stroll along Saeng Chan Beach, watch sunset at Mae Ramphueng Beach, and head into the forest to explore nature at Rayong Botanical Garden. This trip is truly a rest-and-recharge kind of trip. So, let’s see how fun this Rayong getaway can be, and come follow my route around Rayong.

Day 1:
Saeng Chan Beach

Let’s start our Rayong trip at Saeng Chan Beach, one of the most popular beaches where many travelers love to visit. It is a peaceful beach and a very nice place to relax in Rayong. Because the wind and waves around Saeng Chan Beach can be quite strong, a long stretch of rock barriers, called khuen hin thing or rubble mound breakwaters, was built along the coastline to prevent erosion. The barriers stretch for more than 10 kilometers and are arranged in T-shaped formations, giving Saeng Chan Beach a series of curved bays that look almost like horseshoes all the way down the road. It has become one of Rayong’s most photogenic beach landmarks.

For me, Saeng Chan Beach is honestly a very beautiful beach. The mood makes me feel like I am walking along a beach in Busan, South Korea. Especially when you walk close to the rocks along the shoreline, with the wide-open sea as the backdrop, it feels like one of those beaches abroad. It is so pretty that when I posted an Instagram Story of the atmosphere here, my friends actually messaged me asking, “Where are you?”

Along the road by the beach, there is also a dedicated cycling lane and designated parking zones along certain sections. Both sides of the road are lined with shops, restaurants, hotels, and food trucks, so there is no need to worry about getting hungry. When I visited, it was around mid-October. The sea was clear, the weather was not too hot, and there were not too many tourists. I could set up a tarp, sit back, enjoy the sea breeze, and walk leisurely along the beach. It is such a good place for a relaxing beach break.

Cherocco Beach Club

Next, let’s continue to Cherocco Beach Club, a Bali-style beach club café located by Laem Charoen Beach, not far from Saeng Chan Beach where we just visited. The mood and atmosphere here are really lovely. The café is beautifully decorated in a minimal beach club style, with white tones mixed with wood. There are so many photo corners and a very Instagrammable feel, with indoor seating, outdoor areas, and a second floor where you can take photos to your heart’s content.

I tried one of their drinks, the Caramel Dream, 125 THB (around US$3.50). It is a chilled caramel drink with a sweet aroma, balanced by the richness of coffee. The texture is smooth and layered, topped with chocolate shavings and extra caramel over thick, soft milk foam that melts nicely as you drink. It is not too sweet and not too bitter. Even if you are not usually into coffee, you can still give this one a try, though I recommend ordering it less sweet. The flavor is just right that way.

Another drink that fits the seaside atmosphere so well is the Yuzu Honey, 145 THB (around US$4), a yuzu honey soda served in bright, refreshing colors. The lower layer is concentrated yuzu, and when you drink it with the soda, you get a sweet, tangy, sparkling flavor all at once. It feels like a whole citrus orchard bursting in your mouth, finished with the fragrance of a large orange slice and rosemary on top. It is a very refreshing drink, and it pairs perfectly with the Almond Croissant, 95 THB (around US$2.70). The croissant is large, served on a cute plate, and topped with sliced almonds over crisp buttery cream. It works so well with the drink.

Overall, Cherocco Beach Club is one of the cafés I recommend if you are traveling in Rayong. The atmosphere is very good, the minimal design is lovely, and there are many seating zones to choose from comfortably. Even when the café is busy, it does not feel cramped because there are genuinely plenty of seats. Across from the café, they have also created several stylish seating and photo spots in different shapes where you can take pictures. Café-hopping lovers really should not miss it.

Khao Laem Ya

After filling up with sweets, let’s continue to Khao Laem Ya, a beautiful grassy mountain that stretches out into the sea with a very distinctive shape. Khao Laem Ya is located within Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park, which covers both land and marine areas. It is one of the places where travelers love to come for an easy nature walk while enjoying the beautiful mountain and Gulf of Thailand sea views. Honestly, this is one of my favorite places in Rayong.

The view at Khao Laem Ya is beautiful and genuinely impressive. There is also a walking trail of around 1 kilometer, making it a nice place for a light nature walk. The fun part is that you get to climb over coastal rocks, look out over the Gulf of Thailand, and see Ko Samet nearby. You can also do a short climb to reach Khao Laem Ya itself. Most travelers come here to enjoy nature, and the national park has now made the walking route quite well-maintained. It is not difficult or overly tiring at all, and as you walk, the sea breeze keeps blowing against you, making the whole trail feel cool and easygoing.

For this visit to Khao Laem Ya, I came in a very relaxed mode, just enough to enjoy the atmosphere. I did a light trail walk along the rocks for a short stretch, not all the way to conquer the cape or the peak of Khao Laem Ya. Honestly, even just this was already beautiful. The sound of waves hitting the rocks, the cool wind constantly brushing against my face, and the well-preserved nature all created such a good mood. Khao Laem Ya still feels lush and beautiful every time I visit, and I am impressed every single time.

Mae Ramphueng Beach

To wrap up the first day in Rayong, we went to watch the sunset at Mae Ramphueng Beach, which is not far from Khao Laem Ya. It takes only around 5 minutes by car. This is another popular beach in Rayong, with a total beach length of 12 kilometers and a beach road of around 10 kilometers. It is also one of the best places in Rayong to watch a truly beautiful sunset.

Mae Ramphueng Beach also has a local legend. It is said that a young woman heartbroken in love jumped from a boat and passed away here, which led locals in the area to call this beach Mae Ramphueng Beach. A shrine dedicated to Chao Mae Ramphueng was also established in the area for people to pay respect, and many believe it to be very sacred.

For me, Mae Ramphueng Beach is another beach with beautiful sand and impressively clear water. The atmosphere is quieter than Saeng Chan Beach, where we went earlier in the morning. I recommend coming in the evening so you can watch the sun sink into the sea up close. The last golden light of the day slowly disappears over the water, with cool wind moving through the trees, people strolling along the beach, and some swimming in the sea. It has a very romantic and warm vibe. If you come to Rayong, I really recommend stopping by.

Day 2:
Rayong Urban Forest Project

Let’s start the second day by breathing in some fresh air at the Rayong Urban Forest Project, also known as Phra Chedi Klang Nam Mangrove Forest. This area is a mangrove forest around the mouth of the Rayong River, covering Pak Nam and Noen Phra subdistricts in Rayong Province. It spans more than 500 rai and stretches alongside the city, making it one of the most complete natural areas in Rayong. The highlight here is the nature-study boardwalk that runs through the mangrove forest, where you can enjoy spotting various animals living in the area. There is also Phra Chedi Klang Nam, a stupa standing prominently in the middle of the water.

This forest area took several years to develop before the full project was completed across all 4 sections, with a total walking route of 7 kilometers. When I visited, every section was open for walking. The wooden boardwalk is sturdy and very easy to walk on. Along the route, there are resting spots and information signs about the animals living in the area. The fun part is that you can use your phone to scan QR codes on the signs, and AR images of different animals will appear along with the sounds of those animals coming from your phone. It is such a clever detail.

To reach the highlight, Phra Chedi Klang Nam, you have to keep walking along the boardwalk until you arrive at the stupa. The bell-shaped stupa is 10 meters tall and stands on an island in the middle of the river. It was built in 1873 during the time of Phraya Sri Samut Phok Chai Chit Songkhram (Ket Yomchinda), the governor of Rayong at the time. It was originally built as a landmark to let sailors and people traveling by boat know that they had arrived in Rayong. If you walk all the way to the middle of the water and want to pay respect, incense, candles, and flowers are available for offerings too. Anyone who wants to add a little merit to the trip should not miss it.

Rayong Thailand: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Relaxed Escape near Bangkok

Rayong Urban Forest Project is another Rayong attraction that made me feel like the project was designed so people could get close to nature and blend into it beautifully. Even though it exists alongside the city, once you walk along the boardwalk, it feels like stepping into another world. Time seems to slow down here. I could hear nature more clearly, and my body felt more relaxed. This is exactly what people mean when they talk about nature therapy.

Rayong Botanical Garden

Let’s continue letting nature heal us at Rayong Botanical Garden, a large botanical garden covering more than 2,500 rai. The area is home to local plants from Thailand’s eastern region and more than 400 species of rare plants, many of which are endangered. Most of the area is wetlands, so there are plenty of activities to do here, including cycling along nature-study routes, kayaking, and taking a boat ride to enjoy the scenery. The main highlights are experiencing the floating grass rafts, spotting many types of water birds, and seeing the ancient Melaleuca forest. Nature lovers may not want to leave once they arrive.

Rayong Thailand: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Relaxed Escape near Bangkok

Rayong Botanical Garden was established as a research and study center to collect plant species from Thailand’s eastern region. It also serves to conserve plant resources within the wetland and Melaleuca forest ecosystems, while creating a learning space and nature tourism destination where visitors can relax among forest, water, and beautiful natural scenery.

Rayong Thailand: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Relaxed Escape near Bangkok

For this visit to Rayong Botanical Garden, I chose to kayak around the nature area. You can rent a kayak directly from the staff, and the fee is only 100 THB per person per hour (around US$3). The kayaking route follows a large wetland area surrounded by forest. You can paddle along the marked route, where green cloth markers are tied at certain points to show where you can pass. Kayaking here is easy and enjoyable, with surrounding views and tiny aquatic creatures running across the water surface. In some spots, there are beautiful lotus patches in bloom where you can paddle closer to admire them. The area of Rayong Botanical Garden feels incredibly rich and abundant, letting you fully soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

For anyone who wants to visit but does not want to get on the water or kayak like I did, there are many other activities here. You can walk nature trails on the islands in the middle of the pond. There are 5 islands in total: Ko Taew Yai, Ko Taew Lek, Ko Chamuang, Ko Kok, and Ko Narok. You can also visit the ancient Melaleuca forest of eastern Thailand. The Melaleuca forest here is known as the thousand-year-old Melaleuca forest. Most of the area is filled with white Melaleuca trees, with some red Melaleuca trees mixed in as well. If you are afraid you might not find the right spots, you can ask the staff first. Or if you worry about missing the best photo spots while kayaking, you can hire one of the staff to guide you. They will paddle with you to the hidden gem areas up close. It is a fun nature activity, and you get plenty of beautiful photos to bring home. I really recommend coming here.

Baan Pat Café

To end this Rayong trip, we stopped to rest and grab something cold to drink at Baan Pat Café, a lovely little café with a minimal yet homey feel. The café is surrounded by green ponds, mangroves, and nature, making the atmosphere shady, cool, and perfect for slowly sipping coffee.

Rayong Thailand: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Relaxed Escape near Bangkok

What makes the café interesting is that the tables and chairs are not separated into individual tables for each group. Inside, there is only one large wooden communal table with chairs lined up around it. The idea comes from the owner, who wanted café lovers, drink lovers, and dessert lovers, even people who may not know one another, to sit and share the same table. It is a way to encourage people to communicate more in real life. I think it is such a nice concept, like coming here gives you a chance to meet new friends and actually talk to people more.

Rayong Thailand: The Ultimate Travel Guide to Relaxed Escape near Bangkok

If you want to sit closer to nature, the café also has outdoor seating in the garden, with wooden benches placed in different corners. There are also two adorable four-legged staff members running around to welcome guests. The mischievous dogs ignored me when I tried to play with them, but whenever new customers walked in, they ran around like proper receptionists. Too cute.

The menu I tried included the Iced Cocoa Latte, 75 THB (around US$2), a rich but well-balanced cocoa drink that paired nicely with the Croffle Mochi, 75 THB (around US$2). The croffle was crispy outside and soft inside, with a chewy mochi texture baked into it. It came generously drizzled with honey, making it a very satisfying dessert.

Before wrapping up, I also tried the Affogato, 70 THB (around US$2), an intense coffee drink balanced by the sweet, creamy caramel flavor that comes through as you drink. It is made even more fragrant with a scoop of coconut ice cream on top. When you get everything together in one sip, it is so smooth and rich. I recommend trying it.

If you are traveling in Rayong and looking for a cute café with a quiet atmosphere surrounded by nature, where the drink prices are not too high, I recommend Baan Pat Café. It is one of those cafés that does not feel like a typical café, but more like relaxing at a holiday home surrounded by greenery.

And that wraps up my Rayong trip this time. I would say Rayong is another travel province that is perfect for a relaxing getaway. There are many places to visit, with beaches, mountains, and natural attractions all in one province. Most importantly, the beaches are pretty, the sea is clearer than many people might expect, the atmosphere is good, and the coastal roads are fun to drive along without feeling too crowded. Rayong is also not far from Bangkok, taking around 2 hours to reach by car. If you want a good-mood beach trip, try adding Rayong to your travel list. I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed.
