Surat Thani Province is located in the south where everyone is frequently heard of. Talking about this place, of course, Koh Samui will pop up into your mind before other tourist attractions. In the old days, I used to think like that as well (even though I’ve never been to Samui lol), until I paid a visit and study more about Surat Thani, so I know there are a lot of interesting things and places to explore. In this trip review, I’ll divide the travel areas into 3 zones: 1) Khiri Rat Nikhom District, 2) Khao Sok National Park, Phanom District, 3) Cheow Lan Dam (Ratchaprapa Dam), Ban Ta Khun District. This zone arrangement can be easily followed to travel and experience the charm of each district.
Surat Thani is in the eastern south where is known to be the largest province among entire southern Thailand, also the sixth-largest in the country. It’s no surprise this province offers such beautiful sights and several amazing locations to visit whether it be the sea, islands, dams, forests, and national parks. Surat (in short) is thoroughgoing and very impressive. Like myself, I’d been to Surat once (before writing the Cheow Lan Dam review), I like it so much! I like it to the point of returning to travel again for the second time. After finishing that trip, I still craved Surat and want to go over the tourist locations.

Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest
Let’s start with the first location, Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest in Khiri Rat Nikhom District. Before going there, I saw the pictures and it was strongly pushed me to travel because the water is so bright and clear. I immediately pinned the location on my Surat trip planner to be one of the must-visit and a wonderful photo spot.
In the end, I went there as I wished. A surprise was the first feeling coming to my mind when I arrived at the place, I thought it would be more natural establish, built in a raw common style but the vibe turns out to be a water park. Lol
At first, before attending inside, you have to leave all your belongings at the front desk, including food, snacks, and drinks. It is prohibited to bring in due to a cleanliness policy, the entrance staffs are quite strict. After the bag deposit is done, take a 200-meter walk, you’ll see a large pond surrounded by shady trees.
The locals here believed that this is a holy well which springs up at the forest mountain foot, known as ‘Ta Nam’ (natural fountain), it is an area where water flows out of the ground all the time and occurs when there is enough water pressure to cause the natural groundwater running up to the territory. As a result, the villagers are trying to sustain and develop the Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest to be a fascinating tourist destination.
Honestly, I was a little disappointed and regretful. As I mentioned earlier, the place is more similar to a water park, modified by man and reduced natural. But it just my point of view, all in all, it’s considered to be another excellent location to travel to. The water is truly clear, cool, and refreshing when soaking into the pond.
Oh! Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest is not just distinguished for clear water, but there is also a boat for rent to paddle and satisfactory see the green surrounding. Well, it was quite a surprise for me cuz I wasn’t expecting this. 😅
Paddling inside along the path, I felt like true nature must be like this! Lush green trees, the weather is super nice and shady. The boating route is not that far. It takes about 30 mins to complete the course.
⚡️ : For those who plan a visit, it is recommended to come to the boat first, because when using a lot of energy, you start to sweat. After that, you can ease your tiredness by going down the cool water. I promise it’s so refreshing! As for the good visiting time, it’s better to be in the morning since the water is the clearest, no crowded, and also not very sunny. It’s almost like a private swimming pool you can enjoy with!!
Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park
Let’s go on to the next location in Phanom District, coming to Surat and overpass Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park is a big miss opportunity. The place is a monastery surrounded by nature, built of faith and donations from the inhabitant under the leadership of the abbot (Phra Sompong Wachirapanyo), it’s started by constructing an ancient gate with Chedi Kao Yod (nine-step pagoda), then followed by helping to contribute to the construction of other pagodas. This location is sacred and exquisitely beautiful. Whoever planning to visit Surat, don’t skip the amazing Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park, it’s really worth coming to see and pay respect.
If you search ‘Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park’ on IG, you may see tons of the entrance arch pictures since it is considered to be the highlight photo spot. This arch is called ‘Phutthawadee’ built with a round frame and a 9-step pagoda on top. I saw these stunning photos on IG and it’s enthusiasts me to go there, but you know what, the real scene is much more amazing. The arch construction is situated in a good location, it looks just right when taking pictures especially in the early morning at sunrise, the sun will just flow through the arch. And if you’re lucky enough, there will be a fog up here as well. I can only say, it’s charming and terrific. It was truly a pity that I went there in the evening so I have no photo of the morning atmosphere to share with you guys!
⚡️ : The entrance arch is not only the highlights here, if you walk further, you will also see the 5 pagodas (Chedi Loi Fah) containing, 1) Roi Yot Chedi, Phra That Phan Ong Pagoda, 2) Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda, 3) Phuttha Rachawadee Pagoda, 4) Phuttha Nakhon Klang Hao Pagoda, and 5) Phuttha Phan Ong Pagoda. (Now, in the process of constructing the 6th pagoda and building Guanyin Goddess on the front mountain top). The place intends to make a total of 9 pagodas for King Rama IX. What kind of future pagodas they would build, we still have to wait and follow up.
With difficult conditions of limited time, many senior companions, the Roi Yot Chedi, Phra That Phan Ong is closed for renovations. I could only visit Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda and Phuttha Rachawadee Pagoda. Okie! let’s start with the Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda first, it is a pagoda containing the relics of the Lord Buddha and specially built with laterite, sent directly from the city of Kamphaeng Phet. It is also a pagoda located on top of a limestone hill, almost 300 meters above the ground. In front of the pagoda, there is a small lotus pond which enhances the atmosphere to look more peaceful and shadier. As for the perspective, yes, it is indeed awesome!
From Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda, you can continue walking to the nearby Phutta Rachawadee Pagoda (the access is not difficult to walk up to the top since there provides the stairs for visitors, but be careful as some steps are quite steep). This pagoda is an all-white Burmese style, decorated in gold along with Burmese tiered embellishment on the pagoda’s top. The villagers here give special importance to this pagoda because it is dedicated as a royal charity to King Rama IX, they joined together to build and complete Chedi Kao Yod before the royal cremation ceremony (October 2017). The grace scenic must be praised here, the view is not much different from the previous pagoda but both are worth seeing, as well as enjoying the beauty of the expansive Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park. I can say this is one of the locations in Surat Thani I favor the most.
Unfortunately, during my trip, I could climb up to only 2 pagodas, there is still 2 more worth attending and capture the scenic on camera. I promised myself, I’ll come back to Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park and fix what I lost last time. It would be great if I can visit all the pagodas, as well as coming during the sunrise to take pictures of the famous ancient gate.
Kha Sok National Park > Nature Trail Bang Hua Rat Waterfall
You may not believe that Surat Thani is another forested province with many great national parks. Today, I pick the Khao Sok National Park review for you to read, but first I must introduce that most of the Khao Sok National Park area is a mountain complex and low altitude, there are only a few plain areas. This location is known to be the largest evergreen forest and is also a great significance area of the South.
By reading this, I already felt how massive the place is, yet it’s still more to it. Khao Sok National Park is a fertile forest with wildlife and plants, it’s rich and lush to the circumstance of having various animals around there, including 4 other species of wildlife reserve that are; chamois, Fea’s muntjac, tapir, and marbled cat. There are also many rare plants, the highlight and most memorable one of Khao Sok National Park is ‘Rafflesia Arnoldii’.
‘Rafflesia Arnoldii’, the largest flower in Thailand which has a diameter of 50-100 cm. It’s no way that you pass by and coincidentally finds it, because this flower takes up to 9 months to bloom, and it blooms only 4-5 days. Who wants to come and hunt for a rafflesia arnoldii, the park is open to visitors from November to April every year. If anyone has seen it, don’t be shy to share the moment with me!
For those who can’t come during rafflesia arnoldii’s blooming period, you won’t have to regret it since there are a lot of activities awaiting. Khao Sok National Park provides 3 waterfall hiking trail routes, namely 1) Bang Hua Rat Waterfall – Ton Kloi Waterfall, 2) Sib Et Shan Waterfall, and 3) Sib Et Shan Waterfall with a circular staircase path. I chose to go with the first route because it can be started from the park office. Oh! Let me tell you one thing! Before I entered the national park, I stopped to have a meal at the restaurant (called ‘Laab Roi Et’) in front of the park, it’s very delicious, please give it a try! I insist it’s unquestionably good. Then, the American woman asked me the way to get to the park, so I invited her to come along. When walking to the nature trail, I felt lively cuz I had a walking companion and had an English chit-chat. Lol
The beginning of the walking path is a bamboo forest where the trees are very big and tall lining up along the way. Walking about 3 km from the park front, you’ll see Bang Hua Rat waterfall, the waterfall is not so high. There are also rocks positioned to stop, rest, and relax. During my trip, the water was not filled up, so I didn’t see the waterfall that clearly. But it’s still a place you can see the bounty of the forest with nice green surrounding, plus, the access to the point is not difficult, the walkway is smooth ground with no steep slopes at all.
Do you all remember the foreign girl who came with me? At this point, she sat back and picked up the food she had bought from Laab Roi Et restaurant. I waited for her to finish up the food while enjoying the scenery. Waiting and waiting, then, it was raining so heavily that the staff walked over and told me to hurry back to the park. Because if you keep walking, the path ahead will be quite slippery and dangerous. Consequently, I can only stop at Bang Hua Rat Waterfall. Lol 😅
⚡️ : Bang Hua Rat Waterfall is classified as a large and wide waterfall with 2 levels. The first level flows from Khlong Bang Lan to Khlong Sok, while the second level is at Khlong Sok. The surrounding area is filled with natural rocks. During June – January will be a flood period, but you can still raft from Bang Hua Rat waterfall down to Khlong Sok, it takes only about an hour. If you plan to visit this time, don’t forget to prepare a swimming suit.
King Kong Khao Sok
The big landmark where is perfect for taking photographs! King Kong Khao Sok is another place that tourists have to stop by because there is a large courtyard decorated with various installations in each setup zone. Bamboo is used to make a walkway to snap a photo. In the front area, there is a small flower garden. But the main highlight here is the King kong and the giant dinosaur statue crafted of a whole straw! The details are very impressive and extraordinary.
King Kong Khao Sok is not just a place for photos. There are also a café and restaurant. If you’re tired from strolling around, you can stop by to take a leisure time and find something cool to drink. But if you feel like taking pictures is boring, they also have activities for tourists to enjoy such as rafting, riding a tram, and driving an ATV around the park.
Overall, I think the atmosphere of the place is nice, suitable for a stopover from long driving, you can get off the car to stretch, take a walk through the garden, then, do some photo shooting. It’s not a bad idea at all! If you have time, stop by and enjoy the beautiful handicrafts, but if you have a limited time or not a photo shooting big fan, you can skip this place.
Khaosok Boutique Camps
Looking for a peaceful stay and surrounded by nature? Khaosok Boutique Camps is a wonderful choice! The accommodation is built with a boutique style located on the hill, causing you to see the wide landscape and the vibe that is worth a vacation.
The accommodation concept is ‘the smooth contradiction with nature’ presenting by differentiated through a resort theme that provides a Glamping experience, emphasizing the comfort for the guests. While the accommodation discovering in a rural area amidst the green of the forest. Meaning that, if you stay here, you will experience both luxury, city convenience, blended with suburban nature.
⚡️ : The best part of this accommodation is not only the room, Khao Sok Boutique Camp is located on a daily morning foggy spot and is also the point where you can see the sunset over the mountain. Moreover, there are a restaurant, café, and swimming pool to take pleasure in.
Khoa Sok Boutique Camp has 3 types of rooms: 1) Romantic Signature View is a general air-conditioned room with a feature of seeing 270 degrees mountain landscape, 2) Exotic Top View is a tent room with air-conditioned, if opening up the tent, you will see a complex mountain landscape outside the room. And lastly, 3) Sunset View is also a tent room with air-conditioned, but the difference between these 2 latter rooms is the Sunset View can see the sunset in front of the balcony. Personally, I stayed in the Exotic Top View room and I felt like this accommodation is another good option to stay in the Khao Sok area. There are complete facilities, good atmosphere, sleeping amidst nature. Plus, after waking up, you can enjoy a beautiful mountain view right away.
Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort
If Khao Sok National Park is one of the destinations in your planner list, I suggest you come finding accommodation in front of the park entrance and stay there for one night since the area is full of foreigners, it makes the encompassing accommodations have a unique design and provides service quite well. For me, the no.1 accommodation in this zone is Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort.
Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort is an environmentally conscious resort, the rooms, lobby, restaurant, and bar use bamboo and natural substitute materials in the construction to present guests to be a part of nature wherever they are in the resort compound. Moreover, the food here is extraordinary, the chef can blend Thai traditional and modern food very well, the come-out taste is palatable for both Thai and foreigners. The specialty of food has more to mention, the resort owns a vegetable and fruit farm, so, all the dishes are made with ingredients directly from their farm. You can be assured that the ingredients selected are clean and safe without any pesticides.
I chose to stay in a one-story treehouse, which the treehouse here is the accommodation main feature, it is designed with Thai style using a weaving technique applied with modern western style. I can sense the architect had thought this well, even though, in the room, there is no air-conditioned but I didn’t feel hot at all, because there is an opening for the wind to pass through. At night, the weather is quite cool, plus, there are no mosquitoes or insects at all.
⚡️ : The accommodation surrounding is plenteous, it is a forest where animals substantially live. So, Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort warned that the only thing you should be careful with is a ‘monkey’ because it often sneaks into your room to steal food and take a suitcase back home. 🤣 Planning stays overnight here, don’t forget to close the window.
Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort is not only performed well in term of accommodation, but they also offer a lot of activities to do whether it’s half-day or full-day trip to trekking in the forest at Khao Sok National Park, cooking in bamboo near the forest around the resort, arranging a trip to Cheow Lan Dam, going to do activities with elephants, yoga, camping in the jungle, hiking at night, and much…much…more. But let me give you a piece of advice if you’re craving to do activities over there, try to find a plan from outside, the price will be much cheaper. 🤣
What I like about this place the most is, every time you stay there, you support a nature camp for kids who live in the Khao Sok area, you can also participate in activities with them, the said activity is created for children in the community to learn and see the great value of nature. I consider it a very good concept and an excellent place to stay. At first, I just saw the photo on IG and felt like coming here, but when I actually visited, the place was more than an accommodation, it’s a learning center and a space to develop people in the community to have good environmental awareness.
Khao Theppitak Suspension Bridge (Khao Pang Suspension Bridge)
Let’s go on with the Cheow Lan Dam (Ratchaprapa Dam) Ban Ta Khun District zone. Actually, there are many interesting attractions in this zone, but there is one place approved to be the most popular photo spot namely Khao Theppitak Suspension Bridge (Khao Pang Suspension Bridge), a large cable-stayed suspension bridge with a length of 120 meters is a point you can view both the sunrise and the sunset scenery. But the true spotlight is the heart-shaped Khao Theppitak together with the view of Pha Saeng canal where the water flows from Cheow Lan Dam as a backdrop when taking a picture. (Unluckily, during my visit, it looked a bit dry since the dam hadn’t released loads of water 😅.)
Originally, the suspension bridge was constructed to facilitate the transportation of agricultural products for the villagers. But now it becomes a tourist attraction causing the villagers in that area to come up with the idea of operating the orchard tour (with unlimited fruit tasting) for tourists.
Visiting during the durian production, durian lover would be fulfilled because the durian here is considered a heritage of Ban Ta Khun for over 100 years. The flesh is beautifully golden and has a sweet taste. If you want to try it, the fruit will be released during June – July of every year. I can assure you that apart from getting a gorgeous scenery picture while traveling here, you’ll be able to enjoy the local lifestyle as well.
Cheiwlan Camp & Resort
For those who plan to spend overnight on the raft at Cheow Lan Dam, chilling out and lingering around the dam front is also a good option. Any idea where to stay? I recommend checking in at Cheiwlan Camp & Resort, a camping-style accommodation along Pha Saeng canal which brings you to live closer to creation. Besides being next to a beautiful canal, the resort location also provides an excellent limestone mountain panorama.
I chose to stay in a standard room, the room size is quite small but clean with complete facilities. Furthermore, Cheiwlan Camp & Resort has many activities to offer, whether it is swimming at Klong Pha Saeng, rafting, driving ATVs, BBQ grill, including a camping ground, swing, and hammock where you can lie down and relax.
Going south to Surat, having southern food is a must! If you can’t figure out where to eat, I recommend eating at the resort because it’s delicious, large portions, and reasonable price. The stir-fried malindjo leaves with Egg are super good! The malindjo leaves are soft and just right stir-frying with eggs without over-drying. The other fired foods come out well, not greasy at all. The recommend menu here is Yum Pak Kut (Spicy edible fern), the dish gives crispy-sweet vegetables, the spicy sauce is terrific. I can tell this is one of the most delicious cooking accommodations. Just think back, I still feel greedy for it.
For me, the accommodation here is considered a great value for money, the room is fair, many activities to do, plus, the food is very pleasing. As I mentioned earlier, I stayed in a standard room including breakfast for 2 people, it costs only about 1,500-1,900 baht. If you plan to sleep at the dam, it’s advisable to stay here for a night first as you’ll be able to experience both unique charming environments on the same trip.
Cheow Lan Dam / Ratchaprapa Dam
Now, we’ve arrived at the district spotlight, Cheow Lan Dam or also known as Ratchaprapa Dam. I confirm this is one of the most favorite destinations for tourists around the world, I looked through Thailand travel feed on IG and Cheow Lan Dam pictures keep popping up, a vista of steep mountains set amid water looks astonishing, causing the place to entitle as ‘Guilin in Thailand’.
To get here, you can charter a boat for a day trip, but if you have plenty of time, I suggest staying overnight at the raft in Cheow Lan Dam because the perspective beauty here is no joke, including, there’re arranged a variety of activities for you to do during the day whether it be cruising, kayaking, or even lying down still and do nothing, lol.
⚡️ : Before becoming a beautiful dam aka ‘Guilin in Thailand’ where stands the towering rocking mountains above the water and setting to be a destination for worldwide tourists, this place has to exchange a lot for dam construction, it is due to the area was formerly a large and fertile humid forest with a wide variety of wildlife, including many rare and endangered species.
Panvaree The Greenery
About the accommodation price, the resort will conclude as a package to select, there is a 1-night and 2-night package. During my trip, I didn’t have so much time, so I chose the package of 2 days and 1 night (I really wish I can stay longer than that). Their regular price is 9,900 baht per night (2 people), this price is already including other expenses such as round trip boat fee from the dam to the accommodation raft, 3 full board meals, and activities both on-site and cruising to see Khao Sam Klur and the Cheow Lan Dam.
You may get surprised by looking at the price because it’s quite high, but if you looked gradually in good detail, it’s not expensive at all. Food, activity fees, boat rides are all-inclusive. The food is wonderful and keeps filling up like a buffet meal. Lastly, their service is excellent as well.
According to the package activities, in the evening, the resort offers a sunset cruise inside the Cheow Lan dam for guests. But it was a bit unfortunate, the day I went there was raining heavily, so the tour guide and the crews agreed to change a cruise schedule for the next morning instead. While cruising, you’ll be able to see a mist among the high mountains which is the famous scene that describes this place as ‘Guilin in Thailand’, as well as, the popular photo spot ‘Khao Sam Klur’ that claimed to be a highlight of the Cheow Lan dam trip. I tell you, the view is impactful, it’s super awesome! Besides, the guide told us the history of Cheow Lan Dam including various local knowledge.
After finished cruising, I managed to have breakfast, packed the luggage, and be ready to check out. Later on, Panvaree the Greenery took me back to the same point at the dam ridge. The stay was all done. ♥️
500 rai Floating Resort
One of the most famous raft accommodations in Cheow Lan Dam is the 500 rai Floating Resort. The place is regarded as the most majestic surrounding, you can see the elongated limestone mountains reflecting on the emerald green water from every accommodation room. At night, you can see stars in the sky. (The beautiful view here has the world ranking and won the Hotel With The Best Location award from Lonely Planet Recommendation).
To stay here, I chose a 3-day 2-night charter package. The regular price starts at 11,000 baht per person, this price includes all accommodation, meals, kayaks, boats to and from the embarkment. But excluding other activities like hiking or going to other places in Cheow Lan Dam.
This time, I went on a big family trip, so I had to book a Family Suite Room which is a separate raft afar from the other room zone. The suite cannot walk to the lobby or the restaurant, so I had the privilege of taking a boat transferring between the accommodation and the lobby. Looking at the bright side, I had a fun boat ride, absorbing a fresh breeze, and seeing a wonderful vista. 🤣 🤣
⚡️ : There are various activities in the accommodation to select from. Oh! I forget to mention, the 500 rai Floating resort is the only raft in Cheow Lan Dam that has a swimming pool. The guest here can swim in both dam water and pool water. Moreover, in each room, there are 2 kayaks prepared for you to kayaking and enjoy the landscape or take a photo. Or if you have a senior companion like me, this place is also the answer since there provides a massage service whether it is Thai massage, aromatherapy massage, Swedish massage, including a poolside massage that you can lie down, see the front view while getting a relaxation. Nothing better than this!
I didn’t do anything much on the first day, just took a boat from the embarkment to the accommodation. Along the way, you can sight a picturesque panorama of Cheow Lan Dam, including a visit to Khao Sam Klur. I personally was more impressed with Panvaree The Greenery, the previous trip. Because this time, it was almost noon, the sun was so bright and the boat stopped quite distant from Khao Sam Klur, I didn’t find many angles to take a picture.
Finished from the cruise, arrived at the accommodation, then, it’s free time to do whatever you like, eating, lying down, kayaking, or swimming in front of your room raft. You can enjoy anything, but for those who are lazy to move, it no denies that this moment is the real paradise lol.
On the next day, if you can wake up early, I suggest you setting an alarm and seeing the sunrise in front of your room, the image is truly amazing, it’s impressed me a lot!
When the sun rises, the resort prepares a boat to take guests to see the Cheow Lan Dam morning atmosphere which is quiet, pleasant, and spectacular. If you’re lucky, you may see wild animals along the waterfront like wild elephants or hornbill flies. These animals are easy to find in the Cheow Lan dam. After the morning cruise is all done, it’s time to return for breakfast. The dining room is organized as a buffet meal, you can get the food you like, then, enjoy it at the table.
In my POV, the accommodation scenery and vibe I give a full 100 pts, no lesser than this. Because the place is indeed attractive which fits one of the world ranking titles. The room and the common area are also great, decorated beautifully with complete facilities. But there will be a deduction point from the travel information that I find isn’t helpful enough, such as a piece of basic information, the Cheow Lan Dam history, or a story about Khao Sam Klur. If I never traveled here or never did researching before. I wouldn’t know anything. Just come to sightseeing but didn’t feel the place, which is very sad. 😢
By the way, the 500 rai Floating Resort has a small charge outside the packages such as internet, WIFI, or if required to play a SUP board, there will be an additional charge. In my purely personal opinion, I’m pretty impressed with the first time I went a lot more than this time.
Here are the 10 attractions – accommodations from 3 zones in Surat Thani province. What do you think? Is it unexpected that the province features such a variety of tourist attractions? If you plan to visit Surat but still have no idea where to go, you can follow my travel review, I assure you will be very impressed because I’d been there for the second time and I think there is a chance to be the third time soon. 😆
