Surat Thani is a province located in southern Thailand that’s well-known for its beautiful sights and amazing places to visit. When you think of Surat Thani, you might first think of Koh Samui, but there’s actually a lot more to explore in this area.
In this travel guide, I’ll break down the different areas of Surat Thani into 3 zones: Khiri Rat Nikhom District, Khao Sok National Park, and Phanom District, and Cheow Lan Dam (Ratchaprapa Dam) and Ban Ta Khun District. This way, you can easily follow along and experience the charm of each district.
Surat Thani is the largest province in southern Thailand and the sixth-largest in the country. With its mix of sea, islands, dams, forests, and national parks, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. I personally fell in love with Surat Thani on my first visit and even went back a second time because I couldn’t get enough of it. After that trip, I still wanted to explore more of the tourist locations in the area.
✨👀 If you’re reading this travel review on my blog for the first time, I just want to say hello! My name is Kot and I’m real 100% Thai. Therefore, you can be confident that this Thai travel review is a genuine local review, not a travel review done by foreigners or Farangs. So, let’s travel like real Thai locals. Yeahh!
11 Attraction – 3 Zones in Surat Thani
Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest
Let’s kick off our journey in Surat Thani with a visit to Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest in Khiri Rat Nikhom District. I came across photos from Instagram of this place before my trip and was immediately drawn to it because of the crystal-clear water. I knew I had to add it to my list of must-see places and a great spot for taking photos. When I finally got there, I was surprised to find that it was more like a water park than a natural, untouched spot. But it was still really cool!
Before you go inside, you’ll need to leave all your belongings at the front desk, including food, snacks, and drinks. This is because they have a strict policy on keeping the area clean. Once you’ve dropped off your bags, it’s just a short 200-meter walk to the large pond surrounded by shady trees.
The locals in Khiri Rat Nikhom District believe that the Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest is a holy well that springs up at the base of the mountain, known as “Ta Nam” (natural fountain). It’s an area where water constantly flows out of the ground and is caused by the natural pressure of groundwater. The villagers have worked to make this forest a popular tourist destination, preserving and developing the area.
To be honest, I was a bit disappointed and regretful when I got there because, as I mentioned before, it felt more like a man-made water park than a natural spot. But that’s just my opinion. Overall, it’s still a great place to visit. The water is truly crystal clear, cool, and refreshing when you soak in the pond.
Another cool thing about Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest is that you can rent a boat to paddle around and see the beautiful greenery. I was surprised by this and it was a great way to experience the true feeling of nature. The boating route is not long, it takes about 30 minutes to complete the course. The lush green trees, nice weather, and shade make it a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.
⚡️ If you’re planning a visit to Ban Nam Rat Watershed Forest in Surat Thani, I highly recommend starting off with a boat ride. Trust me, you’ll work up a sweat, but the cool water will be the perfect way to cool off and refresh yourself. And the best time to go is in the morning, when the water is crystal clear, there’s no crowd, and the sun isn’t too intense. It’s like having your own private swimming pool!
Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park
Let’s move to the next spot on our Surat trip. Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park in Phanom District is a must-see place. It’s a beautiful monastery surrounded by nature, built through the faith and donations of the local community, led by the abbot Phra Sompong Wachirapanyo. They started by building an ancient gate with a 9-step pagoda called Chedi Kao Yod, and then continued to contribute to the construction of other pagodas. It’s a sacred and gorgeous location that anyone visiting Surat should check out.
If you search for Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park on Instagram, you’ll see tons of pictures of the entrance arch. It’s a popular photo spot and it’s called Phutthawadee. It’s round with a 9-step pagoda on top. I saw these amazing photos on Instagram and it made me want to go there even more. But let me tell you, the real thing is even better. The arch is in the perfect spot for pictures, especially in the early morning during sunrise when the sun shines through it. And if you’re lucky, there might even be fog. It’s truly beautiful. Unfortunately, I went there in the evening so I don’t have any morning pictures to show you.
The entrance arch is not only the highlight here. Make sure not to miss out on the beautiful pagodas here. The park features 5 pagodas called Chedi Loi Fah, including Roi Yot Chedi, Phra That Phan Ong Pagoda, Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda, Phuttha Rachawadee Pagoda, and Phuttha Nakhon Klang Hao Pagoda. They’re currently in the process of building a 6th pagoda and a statue of Guanyin Goddess on the front mountain top, with plans to eventually have a total of 9 pagodas dedicated to King Rama IX.
Due to limited time and many senior companions, the Roi Yot Chedi, Phra That Phan Ong is closed for renovations. I was only able to visit Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda and Phuttha Rachawadee Pagoda. Let’s start with the Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda first, it’s a pagoda containing the relics of the Lord Buddha and it’s specially built with laterite, sent directly from the city of Kamphaeng Phet. It’s also located on top of a limestone hill, almost 300 meters above the ground. In front of the pagoda, there’s a small lotus pond which enhances the atmosphere and makes it look more peaceful and serene. The view is truly awesome from there.
From Phra Phuttha Silavadee Pagoda, you can continue walking to the nearby Phutta Rachawadee Pagoda. The access isn’t difficult since there are stairs for visitors, but just be careful as some steps are quite steep. This pagoda has a unique Burmese style, decorated with gold and traditional Burmese tiered embellishments on top. The villagers here hold this pagoda in high regard because it was built as a royal charity to King Rama IX. They came together to complete Chedi Kao Yod before the royal cremation ceremony in October 2017. The view from this pagoda is similar to the previous one, but both are worth seeing. And don’t forget to take in the beauty of the expansive Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park. It’s one of my favorite spots in Surat Thani.
During my visit to Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Park, I only got to check out two of the pagodas, but I heard that the other two are just as beautiful and worth a visit. I’m definitely planning on coming back to see them all and snap some photos, especially since I missed the chance to see the ancient gate during sunrise. I’ll make sure to catch it next time!
Kha Sok National Park
Nature Trail Bang Hua Rat Waterfall
Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani is a must-see destination for nature lovers. The park boasts a diverse landscape, with mostly mountainous and low-altitude areas, as well as a few plain areas. It’s known for being the largest evergreen forest in the southern region of Thailand.
The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including rare animals like the chamois, Fea’s muntjac, tapir, and marbled cat. The forest is also rich in plant life, but one of the most unique and memorable attractions is the Rafflesia Arnoldii. This flower, known as the largest flower in Thailand, can grow up to 50-100 cm in diameter and takes 9 months to bloom, only lasting for 4-5 days.
If you’re interested in seeing the Rafflesia Arnoldii, plan your visit between November and April when the park is open to visitors. And if you’re lucky enough to spot one, don’t hesitate to share your experience with me!
If you can’t make it during the Rafflesia Arnoldii’s blooming season, don’t worry, there’s still plenty to do at Khao Sok National Park. The park offers three hiking trails to waterfalls, including Bang Hua Rat Waterfall and Ton Kloi Waterfall, Sib Et Shan Waterfall, and Sib Et Shan Waterfall with a circular staircase path. I chose the first trail because it starts at the park office. Oh, and before you enter the park, make sure to stop at the restaurant called ‘Laab Roi Et’, which is the northeastern Thai food in front of the park. It’s super delicious, I promise! And while I was there, I even met an American woman who was looking for directions, so I invited her to join me on the hike. It was nice to have a walking companion and chat in English. It was a lot of fun!
The trail starts off in a beautiful bamboo forest with tall, towering trees lining the path. After about 3 km of walking, you’ll come across the Bang Hua Rat waterfall. It’s not the tallest waterfall out there, but it’s still a pretty sight. There are also some rocks nearby where you can stop and take a break. Unfortunately, when I went, the water level was a bit low, so I couldn’t see the waterfall as clearly as I wanted to. But even still, the forest is so lush and green and the trail is easy to walk on with no steep inclines.
I was lucky enough to have a foreign girl join me on my hike. We took a break at the waterfall and she pulled out some food she had bought from Laab Roi Et. We sat and enjoyed the scenery while she ate. Unfortunately, it started to rain heavily and the park staff advised us to head back since the trail could get slippery and dangerous. So, we had to cut our hike short, but it was still a great experience. If you ever get the chance, be sure to check out Khao Sok National Park and the Bang Hua Rat waterfall!
Bang Hua Rat Waterfall is pretty impressive – it’s large and wide, with two levels. The first level flows from Khlong Bang Lan to Khlong Sok, and the second level is at Khlong Sok. Plus, the area around the waterfall is full of natural rocks, making for a really picturesque scene. Just a heads up, the best time to visit is between June and January, as this is the flood period. But don’t worry, during this time you can still go rafting from the waterfall down to Khlong Sok – it only takes about an hour! Just make sure to bring a swimming suit if you plan on visiting during this time.
King Kong Khao Sok
King Kong Khao Sok is a must-see spot for visitors because of its large courtyard filled with unique installations and photo-worthy set-ups made of bamboo. The front area also has a small flower garden for a picturesque backdrop. The main attraction here is the impressive and life-like King Kong and giant dinosaur statues made entirely out of straw.
King Kong Khao Sok is more than just a photo-op. The park also features a café and restaurant, perfect for taking a break and grabbing a cool drink. For those looking for more activities, there are options like rafting, riding a tram, and even driving an ATV.
Overall, King Kong Khao Sok is a great place to stop by and take a break from a long drive. The atmosphere is nice and the handicrafts are beautiful. If you’re a photography enthusiast, it’s definitely worth a visit. But if you’re short on time or not a big fan of taking pictures, you may want to skip it.
Khaosok Boutique Camps
Khaosok Boutique Camps is a wonderful choice for those looking for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature. The accommodation is built with a boutique style located on the hill, allowing you to see the wide landscape and the vibe that is worth a vacation. The accommodation concept is ‘the smooth contradiction with nature’, which is presented through a resort theme that provides a Glamping experience, emphasizing the comfort for the guests. While the accommodation is located in a rural area amidst the green of the forest, it still provides luxury and city convenience, making it a perfect blend of suburban nature.
⚡️ The best part of this accommodation is not only the room, but also its location. Khao Sok Boutique Camp is located on a daily morning foggy spot and is also the point where you can see the sunset over the mountain. This means that you will be able to wake up to a beautiful mountain view every morning, and enjoy the sunset from your room or the terrace. Moreover, there are a restaurant, café, and swimming pool on the property for you to take pleasure in.
Khoa Sok Boutique Camp has 3 types of rooms for you to choose from. The Romantic Signature View is a general air-conditioned room with the feature of seeing 270 degrees mountain landscape. The Exotic Top View is a tent room with air-conditioning, and if you open up the tent, you will see a complex mountain landscape outside the room. And lastly, the Sunset View is also a tent room with air-conditioning, but the difference between these 2 latter rooms is the Sunset View can see the sunset in front of the balcony.
Personally, I stayed in the Exotic Top View room and I felt like this accommodation is another good option to stay in the Khao Sok area. There are complete facilities, a good atmosphere, and sleeping amidst nature. Plus, after waking up, you can enjoy a beautiful mountain view right away. If you’re looking for a unique and comfortable stay in the Khao Sok area, Khaosok Boutique Camp is definitely worth considering.”

Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort
If you’re planning on visiting Khao Sok National Park, I highly recommend staying at Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort. Not only is it located right in front of the park entrance, but the area is also full of foreigners, which gives the surrounding accommodations a unique design and great service. In my opinion, Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort is the best option in this zone.
One of the things that makes Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort stand out is its environmentally conscious design. The resort uses bamboo and other natural materials in the construction of the rooms, lobby, restaurant, and bar to give guests a true sense of being a part of nature. Additionally, the chef is a master at preserving the authentic flavors of Thai cuisine while also incorporating elements of international flavors. This results in a delicious and satisfying meal that is enjoyed by both locals and foreigners alike. And as a bonus, the resort has its own vegetable and fruit farm, so all the dishes are made with ingredients directly from the farm, which is clean and safe without any pesticides.
I personally stayed in a one-story treehouse, which is one of the main features of the resort. The treehouse is designed with Thai style using a weaving technique and modern western style. I was impressed by how well thought out the design was, as even though there was no air conditioning in the room, I didn’t feel hot at all thanks to the opening for the wind to pass through. Plus, at night the weather is quite cool and there were no mosquitoes or insects at all.
⚡️ The surrounding area of Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort is full of nature and animals. However, the only thing you need to be careful of is the monkeys, as they often sneak into rooms to steal food and even take suitcases back home. So, if you’re planning to stay overnight, make sure to keep your windows closed.
Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort also offers a variety of activities to do, whether it’s a half-day or full-day trip, such as trekking in the forest at Khao Sok National Park, cooking in bamboo near the forest around the resort, visiting the Cheow Lan Dam, going on elephant activities, doing yoga, camping in the jungle, hiking at night and much more. But, if you’re looking to do activities, I suggest trying to find a plan from outside the resort, as the prices will be much cheaper.
One of the things I appreciate the most about this place is that every time you stay there, you’re supporting a nature camp for kids who live in the Khao Sok area. You can also participate in activities with them, which are designed to teach children in the community about the value of nature. I think this is a fantastic concept and it makes Our Jungle Camp – Eco Resort more than just a place to stay, but also a learning center and space to develop environmental awareness in the community. I was initially drawn to this place after seeing photos of it on Instagram, but my actual visit exceeded my expectations.

Khao Theppitak Suspension Bridge (Khao Pang Suspension Bridge)
Let’s move on to the Cheow Lan Dam (Ratchaprapa Dam) in the Ban Ta Khun District zone. This area has plenty of interesting sights to see, but the most popular spot for photos is definitely the Khao Theppitak Suspension Bridge (Khao Pang Suspension Bridge). This large cable-stayed bridge is 120 meters long and offers amazing views of both the sunrise and sunset. But the real highlight is the heart-shaped Khao Theppitak, especially when paired with the stunning Pha Saeng canal and the water flowing from the Cheow Lan Dam as a backdrop. Unfortunately, during my visit, the dam hadn’t released much water so it was a bit dry.
The suspension bridge was originally built to help villagers transport agricultural products, but now it’s a popular tourist attraction. The local villagers have even started offering orchard tours with unlimited fruit tastings for visitors.
If you’re a durian lover, be sure to visit during the durian season (June to July) because the durian here is considered a Ban Ta Khun heritage and has been grown for over 100 years. The flesh is a beautiful golden color and has a sweet taste. Not only will you get to take beautiful pictures, but you’ll also get to experience the local lifestyle and culture.
Cheiwlan Camp & Resort
If you’re planning on spending a night on a raft at the Cheow Lan Dam, it’s also a great idea to hang out and relax around the dam front before heading inside. One place I recommend checking out is Cheiwlan Camp & Resort. It’s a camping-style accommodation along the Pha Saeng canal that will give you a chance to really connect with nature. Not only is it next to a beautiful canal, but the resort also offers stunning views of limestone mountains.
I stayed in a standard room, which was small but clean and had all the necessary amenities. Cheiwlan Camp & Resort also has plenty of activities to keep you busy, like swimming in Klong Pha Saeng, rafting, ATV riding, and BBQing. There’s also a camping ground, swings, and hammocks where you can relax and unwind.
If you’re heading south to Surat Thani, make sure you try some southern Thai food! The resort has a restaurant that serves up delicious, large portions of food at a great price. My favorite dish was the stir-fried malindjo leaves with egg – the leaves were soft and perfectly cooked, and the egg added a nice richness. Other menu items, like the Yum Pak Kut (spicy edible fern), were also delicious and expertly prepared.
All in all, I think the resort offers great value for money. The room is fair, there are plenty of activities to do, and the food is delicious. I stayed in a standard room with breakfast included for 2 people and it cost around 1,500-1,900 baht per night. So if you’re planning to spend the night at the dam, I definitely recommend staying here for a night first so you can experience both the unique charm of the dam and the surrounding area.

Cheow Lan Dam / Ratchaprapa Dam
Now, we’ve arrived at the district spotlight, Cheow Lan Dam or also known as Ratchaprapa Dam. I confirm this is one of the most favorite destinations for tourists around the world, I looked through Thailand travel feed on IG and Cheow Lan Dam pictures keep popping up, a vista of steep mountains set amid water looks astonishing, causing the place to entitle as ‘Guilin in Thailand’.
To get here, you can charter a boat for a day trip, but if you have plenty of time, I suggest staying overnight at the raft in Cheow Lan Dam because the perspective beauty here is no joke, including, there’re arranged a variety of activities for you to do during the day whether it be cruising, kayaking, or even lying down still and do nothing, lol.
⚡️ : Before becoming a beautiful dam aka ‘Guilin in Thailand’ where stands the towering rocking mountains above the water and setting to be a destination for worldwide tourists, this place has to exchange a lot for dam construction, it is due to the area was formerly a large and fertile humid forest with a wide variety of wildlife, including many rare and endangered species.
Panvaree The Greenery
About the accommodation price, the resort will conclude as a package to select, there is a 1-night and 2-night package. During my trip, I didn’t have so much time, so I chose the package of 2 days and 1 night (I really wish I can stay longer than that). Their regular price is 9,900 baht per night (2 people), this price is already including other expenses such as round trip boat fee from the dam to the accommodation raft, 3 full board meals, and activities both on-site and cruising to see Khao Sam Klur and the Cheow Lan Dam.
You may get surprised by looking at the price because it’s quite high, but if you looked gradually in good detail, it’s not expensive at all. Food, activity fees, boat rides are all-inclusive. The food is wonderful and keeps filling up like a buffet meal. Lastly, their service is excellent as well.
According to the package activities, in the evening, the resort offers a sunset cruise inside the Cheow Lan dam for guests. But it was a bit unfortunate, the day I went there was raining heavily, so the tour guide and the crews agreed to change a cruise schedule for the next morning instead. While cruising, you’ll be able to see a mist among the high mountains which is the famous scene that describes this place as ‘Guilin in Thailand’, as well as, the popular photo spot ‘Khao Sam Klur’ that claimed to be a highlight of the Cheow Lan dam trip. I tell you, the view is impactful, it’s super awesome! Besides, the guide told us the history of Cheow Lan Dam including various local knowledge.
After finished cruising, I managed to have breakfast, packed the luggage, and be ready to check out. Later on, Panvaree the Greenery took me back to the same point at the dam ridge. The stay was all done. ♥️

500 rai Floating Resort
One of the most famous raft accommodations in Cheow Lan Dam is the 500 rai Floating Resort. The place is regarded as the most majestic surrounding, you can see the elongated limestone mountains reflecting on the emerald green water from every accommodation room. At night, you can see stars in the sky. (The beautiful view here has the world ranking and won the Hotel With The Best Location award from Lonely Planet Recommendation).
To stay here, I chose a 3-day 2-night charter package. The regular price starts at 11,000 baht per person, this price includes all accommodation, meals, kayaks, boats to and from the embarkment. But excluding other activities like hiking or going to other places in Cheow Lan Dam.
This time, I went on a big family trip, so I had to book a Family Suite Room which is a separate raft afar from the other room zone. The suite cannot walk to the lobby or the restaurant, so I had the privilege of taking a boat transferring between the accommodation and the lobby. Looking at the bright side, I had a fun boat ride, absorbing a fresh breeze, and seeing a wonderful vista. 🤣 🤣
⚡️ : There are various activities in the accommodation to select from. Oh! I forget to mention, the 500 rai Floating resort is the only raft in Cheow Lan Dam that has a swimming pool. The guest here can swim in both dam water and pool water. Moreover, in each room, there are 2 kayaks prepared for you to kayaking and enjoy the landscape or take a photo. Or if you have a senior companion like me, this place is also the answer since there provides a massage service whether it is Thai massage, aromatherapy massage, Swedish massage, including a poolside massage that you can lie down, see the front view while getting a relaxation. Nothing better than this!
I didn’t do anything much on the first day, just took a boat from the embarkment to the accommodation. Along the way, you can sight a picturesque panorama of Cheow Lan Dam, including a visit to Khao Sam Klur. I personally was more impressed with Panvaree The Greenery, the previous trip. Because this time, it was almost noon, the sun was so bright and the boat stopped quite distant from Khao Sam Klur, I didn’t find many angles to take a picture.
Finished from the cruise, arrived at the accommodation, then, it’s free time to do whatever you like, eating, lying down, kayaking, or swimming in front of your room raft. You can enjoy anything, but for those who are lazy to move, it no denies that this moment is the real paradise lol.
On the next day, if you can wake up early, I suggest you setting an alarm and seeing the sunrise in front of your room, the image is truly amazing, it’s impressed me a lot!
When the sun rises, the resort prepares a boat to take guests to see the Cheow Lan Dam morning atmosphere which is quiet, pleasant, and spectacular. If you’re lucky, you may see wild animals along the waterfront like wild elephants or hornbill flies. These animals are easy to find in the Cheow Lan dam. After the morning cruise is all done, it’s time to return for breakfast. The dining room is organized as a buffet meal, you can get the food you like, then, enjoy it at the table.
In my POV, the accommodation scenery and vibe I give a full 100 pts, no lesser than this. Because the place is indeed attractive which fits one of the world ranking titles. The room and the common area are also great, decorated beautifully with complete facilities. But there will be a deduction point from the travel information that I find isn’t helpful enough, such as a piece of basic information, the Cheow Lan Dam history, or a story about Khao Sam Klur. If I never traveled here or never did researching before. I wouldn’t know anything. Just come to sightseeing but didn’t feel the place, which is very sad. 😢
By the way, the 500 rai Floating Resort has a small charge outside the packages such as internet, WIFI, or if required to play a SUP board, there will be an additional charge. In my purely personal opinion, I’m pretty impressed with the first time I went a lot more than this time.
Check and book via Agoda Check and book via Booking Check and book via Expedia Check and book via Trip Check and book via HotelsRoom rate starting at 11,000 baht / night. View rates and book 500 rai Floating Resort, click on the link below to check and reserve through your favorite OTA right away.
